Where have all the great domestic beers gone? With all of the nation’s great macrobrews having been sold to companies abroad, it’s time to celebrate those great beers that are truly still American. And there’s no American beer older than Yuengling.
While Yuengling’s signature lager may not have made it to the coast (the company only has three breweries–two in Pennsylania and one in Florida), it’s a precious commodity for those who have tasted it. Yuengling strikes a great balance between a pale ale and a darker lager, delivering taste and refreshment good for all seasons.
Now brace yourself for the bad news: Yuengling still hasn’t made it any farther west than Ohio, which might be the biggest national tragedy that doesn’t involve ducks covered in oil. Nobody can blame you for not buying an American car these days, but trust us on the Yuengling: it’ll get you to exactly where you want to go.
Price will vary depending on location.

Also hasn’t made it farther north than NY, causing no end of heartbreak to those of us above 43 deg N.
Their Black and Tan and their Porter are fantastic as well.
I’ve even seen a Yueng Bock around this summer
Couldn’t agree more…and its cheap, about the same cost as your Buds or Coors.
I’m liking Yuengling more and more, and many places have it on tap which is cool. I don’t buy it for home, though. I like High Life too much.
Thank God someone said it. I’ve been a Yuengling fan for years. So much so that I even ship it to my sister Austin. Great beer, unbeatable price. It’s a “go to” for any occasion, and here in the DC area you can get kegs!
I bought a case of it a few weeks ago for $16. Good times. You also can’t buy it in Massachusetts. My brother always brings some back with him after he visits here in upstate NY.
yuengling? seriously? it’s pretty good, but there are so many better choices out there! sam adams (if you want american), belhaven, any rogue beer, any beer by stone brewery, and so many more.
1) it does not taste anything like a pale ale- its a lager.
2) Its not that good.
3) Beer in green or clear bottles goes bad quicker due to light damaging the beer. Amber bottles block it well.
4) You are a moron.
Yuengling’s Chesterfield Ale is fantastic. I used to date a girl from Pottsville (where the original brewery is located), and her dad got me hooked on the stuff. The Premium is nice too, nothing special, but it beats domestic equivalents.
I remember the first time I drank a Yuengling. In college, some girl offered me one and I said in my most manliest voice that “I don’t drink Japanese beers.” then slammed my Beast Ice Light or whatever nonsense I was drinking. Then she said “It’s from Pennsylvania, dumbass.”
I live in southern Delaware, the cradle of Dogfish Head (hi, Sam!), but I’m going to have to agree. My “favorite beer” changes with the weather, but Yuengling Lager is a reliable standby that’s always good.
It’s pretty good for a cheap beer to always have in the fridge. It and Leinenkugel are the best American’s in that price range. Costco had Stella last time I was there though so screw them both.
Yuengling will always hold a special place in my heart for as long as they avoid the great American beer tragedy that is just trying to stuff as many hops as humanly possible into a vat and then calling it a “craft brew.”
I live in Cincinnati and love the Lager. It is a damn shame that they are missing out on selling Lager in Ohio, I know a large number of guys that love it and would change their brand of beers if it was sold here.
You fags just drink Sam Adams because its trendy. Lager is awesome. All these “microbrews” just try and copy Sam adams and Sam Adams sucks!
Screw Yuengling, Lion’s Head is from the same area and is way better as well as cheaper.
When I lived in Bucks County a few years ago, asking the bartender for a lager would get you set up with a yuengling. Absolutely fantastic.
What? When did Yuengling make it to Ohio? Still waiting for it and for New Belgium’s Fat Tire.
I live 15 min from pottsville, if you ask for lager they know what you mean!! and if you think lions head is better than lager your out of your god damn mind.
@essequemodeia…Greetings from Bucks County!
And that’s absolutely true, ordering just “a lager” here gets you a Yuengling. The only thing they may ask is draft or bottle.
I’m from Philly and I weep barley tears every fucking day that I’m deprived my precious Yuengling. Have no idea why the hell it isn’t making it west.
a great little secret about yuengling is that, if you top off a bottle of it with jaegermeister its actually very good, and you get pretty hammered doing it. i know it sounds gross but once you’ve tried it you’ll remember reading about it in the comments section. toss a shot of jaeger in a draught of yueng.
Res Ipsa Loquitur… let the good times roll
I also live in Cincinnati, and I’m going to keep banging this broom on the ceiling until SRV turns his GODDAMN STEREO DOWN!
Wait… Lionshead… really, guy?
I only buy their black and tan for home drinking, but I always buy this shit at a bar when it is on tap. For the price, it is quality amazing. I turned 21 around the time it hit Tennessee, and hicks bless america I never have to drink budmillercoors on tap here. Oh yea, Sam Adams, REALLY? lololol
And Yuengling Black & Tan is my favorite beer. Spiteful Motherfuckers.
As I’m formerly from Pottsville it’s really weird but quite cool to see Yuengling talked about. I live in Britain but I still miss it especially Chettie.
Only thing better than draft or bottles is the 16 oz. cans. Yes they have pounders.
This is the next Rolling Rock – great inexpensive beer made popular, sold to Anheiser Bush and brewing moved to Newark…. “from the glass lined tanks next to the turnpike….”
ima haft agree with meatsack, lionshead is the best cheap beer ever, yueng is great tho, a lil heavy
As a Floridian myself, I gotta say Yuengling is about the only beer I can stand the taste of. Most domestics taste like piss (yes, they do, your taste buds are just so damaged, you can’t tell anymore), but Yuengling actually has a good flavor. It’s a great beer for people who hate beer (me) to start off a nice night out with the guys. And it’s usually not ridiculously expensive, hell they even sell it at Walmarts here in Pensacola.
Sierra Nevada is without a doubt the best cheap brewery, but I instead opt for better beer that is a little pricier. If you seen anything made by Stone, Dogfish Head, Deschutes, pick it up and you will be hooked.
Also, Yeung is not heavy at all.
To all of you saying Lionshead is better, well your right if you think better is a water down adjunct lager that is made with rice and corn instead of 100% malted barley.
If you don’t like Yuengling, you’re probably a terrorist. Or just a dick.
oldest brewery in the USA, bitches.
@bitterbeer
I’m from Latrobe (former home of RR) and they were bought out the day after my 22nd birthday. Fighting a killer hangover and learning the lifeblood of my home is leaving at the same time makes for a shitty day. Yuengling has become my adopted favorite beer since that day.
@flexo: condolences. As a pledge I could recite the back label before a match I held upside down burned to my finger. I’ve gone local in Houston (St. Arnolds, Dale’s, Shiner, and Real Ale), but grab a Yuengling if I’m ever in the mid atlantic.
Any truth to the rumor that a bunch of ex-employees were going to buy the glass lined tanks of Old Latrobe and start brewing again?
the light is commendable…and tastes better than lionshead (even though the latter has cool picture/word games on the bottom of the caps).
