Robot Chicken Crew On Menu At Fox

It’s bad when your own headline makes you kind of cringe, isn’t it? Yeah, anyway, the Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Robot Chicken and Titan Maximum masterminds Seth Green, Matt Senreich and Tom Root are working on an animated series for Fox.

Green, Senreich and Root’s project, which uses family life and a high school as backdrops for a wide cast of characters, “will have an aesthetic familiar to viewers of Fox’s popular animated comedies,” said Green, an original cast member on Fox’s flagship animated comedy, “Family Guy.”

If nothing else, this should keep Green busy as he does voice work for Family Guy and The Cleveland Show as well. I haven’t seen Titan Maximum yet, but I’m always down for more prime time network animation, especially if it’s not all by the same guy, I’m looking your way Seth MacFarlane.

The Black Eyed Peas Get Geeky With It

11.02.09 Written by Dietsch

So I’m sitting here working on the blog with my iPod set to shuffle on the Hip Hop/Rap genre (not Hip-Hop/Rap, I guess that’s something else), when what sounds like a rock song about technology and wanting things now pops on. I had no idea what it was, so I walked over to discover it’s a song called “Now Generation” by The Black Eyed Peas from their most recent record The E.N.D. (yeah, I like the BEP, what’s it to you?). I hadn’t heard this song yet because this isn’t a very good record (too mellow for my tastes), but this song took me by surprise and not just because it sounds like an actual band is playing it.

I think it’s common knowledge by now that the Peas were just a trio of hip hop nerds before Fergie joined and they blew up. Well, apparently this song (sung by Fergie and Will i Am) is trying to get back to the geekery as is the live perfomance in the video above. You’ve got Fergie’s weird Regan-from-The Exorcist-spiderwalk posing and the giant Gort-like inflatable robots bearing the groups name in the video above. Here’s a few verses from the song:

Those Damn Punks Get A Biopic

11.02.09 Written by Dietsch

You might think that news from Risky Business about a Ramones biopic doesn’t count as geek news, but you’d be completely wrong. Long before emo came along and made being lame cool, the Ramones were rocking peoples’ faces off with their ridiculously fast songs about teenage alienation. Don’t believe me? Just check out the above video for “Pinhead” and their rendition of the Spider-Man theme song below.

The movie will be based on the book by Joey Ramone’s real life brother Mickey Leigh called I Slept With Joey Ramone and is due out in September.

Ricky Gervais Gives Elmo Shit

You can’t go wrong with a British comedian telling a Muppet “These are the no go areas: drugs, child abuse, the Holocaust.” Thanks to the Associated Press for posting this hilarious compilation of out takes from Gervais’ visit to Sesame Street and Bleeding Cool for drawing out attention to it.

The Top 10 Action Figures DC Direct Should Redo

11.02.09 Written by Dietsch

DC Comics’ toy and statue division DC Direct has been around for 11 years now. Lately, their MO has been to put out figures based on specific artist interpretations of our favorite characters, but it wasn’t always so. The company got its start putting out figures based on WildStorm and Vertigo properties and then moved on the superheros, but there were some definitely missteps along the way and we think it’s time to get some redesigns on our favorite characters, hopefully with an eye towards the artists who made them famous.

10. BIRDS OF PREY

Yeah, we know the Birds aren’t active at the moment, but how rad would it be to have a sexy 3-pack based on the artwork of Ed Benes, Greg Land or Nicola Scott? The answer is “super rad.” Of course, you’d also have to update the costumes and maybe throw a Batgirl costume under Barbra Gordon’s civies as a nod to her history.

MMOh My

11.02.09 Written by Dietsch

MMO’s aren’t my cup of tea. I don’t have the time, patience or money for them. That being said, it looks like DC Universe Online and Star Wars: The Old Republic are trying to suck me in by combining my love of both properties with a strong desire to waste more time. And, yeah, I know the above trailer is old, but it’s still damn cool.

All this is a roundabout way of telling you that Kotaku had two big pieces of information for my fellow fans looking forward to said games. First up, they reported on how to sign up to hopefully-maybe get a chance to play the beta of SW: TOR. You’ve got to sign up for the forums and then you can head to the Game Testing Page to sign up. Again, it’s not guaranteed, but what else are you doing today?

On the DCUO front, Kotaku showed off 18 pictures of Green Arrow images from the game. There’s a great mix of images from the design stages to turnarounds to in-game screens that are all pretty impressive. As a GA fan, it gets me excited for the game. Also, take a second to read the comments in which vid3oman64 calls GA a racist. Now, I know I’m jumping in to aid a ficitonal character here, but nothing could be further from the truth. Green Arrow’s the uber-liberal of the superhero community and everyone knows it. Get your facts straight vid3oman64! Anyway, here’s some pics from Kotaku.

Tim Schafer on Jimmy Fallon

11.02.09 Written by Dietsch

I can’t think of an original-concept game I’ve been more excited about than Tim Schafer’s Brutal Legend. Rock and roll plus demon slaying? How has no one created this game yet? Plus, getting Jack Black to voice our hero roadie Eddie Riggs was a stroke of genius. For those of you who might not know Brutal Legend puts Riggs in a demon realm where he’s got to stay alive armed with a battle axe and his guitar Clementine. To get people psyched for his game, which drops on October 13th, Schafer–the brains behind The Secret Of Monkey Island–stopped by Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last Friday.

In the clip, Fallon says he and his crew want to start treating video game releases like movie premieres, so hopefully this will bring the people behind the scenes of the video game world to the forefront and get them some much-deserved screen time.

NBC's Going After Even More Geek Viewers

11.02.09 Written by Dietsch

News had been kicking around the blogosphere this week about J.J. Abrams’ next show kicking off a bidding war between ABC, NBC and CBS. Well, according to THR, NBC came away with the victory and the show. Having only recently watched all of Alias, I’m not sure how excited I am to see Abrams return to the world of spy relationships–the show stars a married spy couple–but the dude’s earned enough cred thanks to Lost and Fringe that I’ll give anything he’s got his name on a shot.

THR also reported (man, don’t those guys ever sleep?) that NBC is working to finish a deal to make a show called Midnighters based on Scott Westerfeld’s trilogy of books The Secret Hour, Touching Darkness and Blue Moon.

midnighters

Here’s the overall plot summary according the the Midnighters Trilogy Wiki page:

15-year-old Jessica Day moves with her family to Bixby, Oklahoma after her mother gets a job offer at a high-tech aerospace company. Upon arriving in Bixby, Jessica discovers that she is a Midnighter and is thus able to enter the “Blue Time” – a secret hour hidden within the instant of midnight.

The Midnighters each have their own super abilities which they use to help people. I’ve never read these books and even though I was burned pretty bad by the first season of Heroes, I’ll give pretty much any superhero-like show a shot (except Smallville for whatever reason). Anyone familiar with the books? Are they any good?

Robert Kirkman Talks Walking Dead Show

11.02.09 Written by Dietsch

walkingdead50azj0

Newsarama talked to Robert Kirkman of Invincible and Walking Dead fame about AMC’s proposed (I’ll believe it when I’m watching it myself) TV show based on his zombie comic Walking Dead which boasts a pilot written and directed by Stephen King transmogriphier Frank Darabont.

I think “Watchmen” and the “Sin City” movie …those [films] are really entertaining…but I can read the comic. I don’t need to have the comic acted out in front of me by a bunch of actors. I like things like “Iron Man”, where they take the best parts about a lot of different comics and spin it into a new story, and it gets kind of the best parts of everything put together.

Luckily, I trust Frank Darabont to know what the best parts are and so, I’m hoping that’s what we’ll end up with “The Walking Dead.” I want him to pick and choose and do the best possible version of “The Walking Dead” as a TV show. While I’m 100% sure he’ll be doing a ‘Walking Dead’ show that will be faithful and everyone will enjoy, I hope he veers off in any direction that he sees fit as he comes up with good ideas, because he is a brilliant writer and director. It would be absurd for me to sit back here and want him to follow my comic book exactly.

I’m psyched to hear this news because I have a love/hate relationship with Walking Dead. See, I love zombies and I’ve grown to really enjoy the characters and scenarios Kirkman has created (I read every issue and have all the trades on my shelf), but I hate how Kirkman overwrites the dialogue scenes. Every character says pretty much everything they’re thinking and conveys every step they went through to get to any conclusion. It can be tedious, but maybe collaborating with the TV folks will make for a better, more concise product. Let’s label this one under “wait and see” because it’s still far too early to tell.
