A Short History of Crappy Storage

05.20.10 Written by S Tran

It is rumored that Bill Gates once said, “640K ought to be enough for anybody.” back in 1981. He denies ever saying it although personally, I’m not sure why he cares. If I had $50 billion I don’t think I would even be able to hear rumors about me through my solid gold bedroom doors as I lay down in my bed made of rubies and emeralds Richie Rich style.

"What?I can't hear you. I am taking a dump on my diamond toilet."

Still, it is kind of a goofy statement to make and shows that people can be a little shortsighted. I had my own Bill Gates moment a year ago when we bought a new computer. It had a 500Gb hard drive and I had another 250Gb external drive hooked up to it. I remember looking at it and thinking my days of upgrading were done. Read the rest of this entry »

When Should You Use A Taser?

04.15.10 Written by S Tran

There is a popular series of videos on the Interweb that has a person demonstrating a blender on steroids. The  videos tests the limits of the blender by putting in various objects and asking the now famous catchphrase “Will It Blend?” Obviously there is no need for anyone to ever blend expensive electronics as we are pretty sure it would taste like crap afterward, but it is useful to show how the blender could be used.

USA! USA!

The folks who make the Taser also produce a fairly useful product. Unlike the blender folks though they do not seem to have the same kind of marketing savvy. We have been unable to find any definitive guides as to when you should use the various Taser products. So to that end we present you with our guide on proper use of the Taser in various real life situations.

Mind Reading Technology Will Doom Us All

04.04.10 Written by S Tran
Popular Science recently ran an article about some scientists at Berkeley who have built a working mind reading machine. On hearing this most people think this is awesome news when in fact we should be trying to stop this at all costs.

Scientists, always messing stuff up.

It turns out the neuroscientists have come up with a way to measure blood oxygen levels to the brain. Then a machine interprets that blood flow to draw a rough picture of what the person is looking at based on patterns it has learned from the person in the past.

Facebook Face Off – Mafia Wars vs. Farmville

04.01.10 Written by S Tran

Two of the most successful applications ever invented for Facebook are Mafia Wars and Farmville. One game explores the dark underworld of organized crime, the other game has you playing as member of the mafia. Whether you chose the role of bad ass farmer or crime syndicate kingpin, you would be joining the millions of grandmothers, uncles, aunts and little children who spend hours every week trying to grow their virtual tomatoes or virtual crime empires.

Lost In Technology

03.11.10 Written by S Tran

In the course of my day I check at least four email accounts in addition to message accounts on two different social networks. As a writer I also check into several websites for private messages. In addition, I post regularly on a few different forums and read several blogs.

I also Skype, have a Google Voice account. a photobucket account, a Google Docs account, and a Digg account as well as a few others I have forgotten about or stopped using. We own a desktop and a netbook which is connected by a router; set it up myself. I consider myself hip, informed and connected. I use the word “dude” on a regular basis.

The Chatroulette Experiment

03.03.10 Written by S Tran
Much has been written recently about Chatroullette, the latest “It” thing on the Internet, which is pretty impressive when you consider the competition it faces. Somewhat even more amazing is that it was created by a 17 year old kid from Russia, if you believe the New York Times, which we hear is usually fairly reliable.
Since he created it for fun a few months ago, the site has gone from a few dozen hits a day to tens of thousands of hits. Each time I tried to log on the site showed more than 20,000 people on at any given time.
The program is a weird mix of speed dating, chat room, Skype and random porn all in one. You log on by going to chatroullette.com. Once you get in you click the “Play” button and you get connected to a random person somewhere in the world. Anytime you want, you click on the “Next” button to connect to a new person.
People have found the process to be a bit like crack, spending hours and hours going from person to person. Some crybabies found the experience to be a bit traumatizing as they felt that stabbing pain of rejection when the complete stranger on the other end clicked the “Next” button.
What I wanted to find out was what exactly would make a random person stay long enough to chat with me for a few minutes. I developed a test to see what would get  and keep people’s attention long enough for me to ask them a few questions. I set up five different scenarios and ran them through 10 random people each.
