Gene Roddenberry did such great work with Star Trek, it’s easy to overlook his misses. And by misses, we mean the multiple shows he tried selling to networks after Star Trek that didn’t get made. Now, his name and ideas were powerful enough that a bunch of his ideas got adapted (albeit largely changed) after his death on TV as Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda and Gene Roddenberry’s Final Conflict and in comics as Gene Roddenberry’s Lost Universe (later renamed Xander In The Lost Universe).
Now, we might be seeing another of Roddenberry’s ideas on the screen again, as Ron Howard and Brian Grazer (Arrested Development) are developing a pilot for a remake of 70′s pilot The Questor Tapes and Tim Minear (Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse, everything Joss Whedon does) is in talks to produce.
If you never saw it, the pilot follows android Questor in his search for his creator, who reveals that he is the latest in a long line of androids left on Earth by aliens to help guide humanity. Oh, and Questor has the typical android hobby: trying to understand humanity. Man, are we that hard to figure out?

The Questor Tapes was a terrific pilot in its time but I’m not enthused about this remake.When the producers of Star Trek:The Next Generation were developing that series someone suggested to Gene Roddenberry of reviving his Questor character & reimagining him as Data.I enjoyed the Data character for all 7 seasons of ST:TNG as well as in 4 films.But for me the originality of Questor no longer exists since we saw Data & the growth,issues,& challenges he faced as an android.Questor would simply be Data all over again in the 21st century.I’d much prefer to see Gene’s other TV pilots of Assignment:Earth or Genesis II rebooted instead.
