While everyone always worries about the excess water you waste when you flush a toilet, no one ever thinks about the potential energy that gets lost down the pipes also. Well, enterprising Brit Tom Broadbent has created HighDro Power, a turbine that recovers that lost energy from the falling water (and waste) of each toilet flush.
Now, you’re probably thinking that it’s not a lot of energy from the average home (even if you’re eating at Taco Bell every night) and you’re right – the HighDro Power is designed to go into commercial buildings – he estimates that it would save $1,400 in electricity costs for a seven story building and hotels might even make money on the deal from their constant flushing and showers. It’s pretty sweet (relatively speaking), but we just don’t want to have to be the ones to install them.
