Patrick Priebe built a pulse laser gun which can send a 1 kW pulse of coherent infrared light through a razorblade, sheets of plastic, and half a centimeter of styrofoam at a range of up to three meters for dark surfaces. His aim, he says, was to build it to be as light and compact as possible, rather than his aim being to capture Sonic the Hedgehog and build ships shaped like eggs. Dude needs to aim higher. He has a compact pulse laser gun; the obvious next step is taking out the hedgehog.
It took him about 70 hours to build the gun, which weighs two pounds and is about 32 cm (12.6″) long. He’s already sold it (TO WHO? I MUST ROB HIM.) but is willing to talk to prospective buyers of the next laser gun. Unfortunately, the pulse coming from the Q-switched Nd:YAG laser has a duration of only about 100 nanoseconds and Patrick doesn’t have an infrared camera to capture something like that, so the burst itself isn’t shown in the pictures and video below. Also, there’s no audio, so just imagine a blogger making pew pew pew sounds for three minutes straight, because that’s what I’m doing right now. Regardless of when you read this.
