So, if you didn’t torrent it from Australia, you probably saw Thor this weekend. We won’t bother with an overall review since there are bazillions of those. But there were a few points we wanted to bring up about the God of Thunder’s cinematic debut.
For the sake of spoilers, we’ll put everything under a cut, but if you’ve got something you loved or hated, let us know in the comments.
Kenneth Branaugh was a great choice for director: his fingerprints are all over this movie, and really kept it from being just another TV pilot with a bigger budget like some Marvel movies (I’m looking right at you, “The Incredible Hulk”).
That said, somebody really should have realized that the opening is kind of slow at first, especially compared to the rest of the movie. I was dreading it was going to be a serious, humorless, grandiose slog. But fortunately, once Thor gets depowered it becomes a lot better.
One thing the trailers didn’t mention, at all, was just how damn funny this movie is. Seriously, even Heimdall gets a funny moment. Personal favorite: the drinking contest.
Also welcome: Loki having an actual character arc. They didn’t really set up why he wanted to destroy Jotunheim as well as they could, but it was still nice to see an antagonist who was actually, you know, developed.
So, what about you?

Saw the movie last week (in the Netherlands it already out for almost 2 weeks now) in the theater, and whas expecting another crap movie. But it suprised me, and i even liked it. For the people who are going to watch it, sit out the end credits there will be a final scene after that. This is a long Marvel tradition (also the Pirates of the Carabian movies do this).
Torrented like a mad man. Yeah thought it was great, surprised at how funny it was and the action sequences on the Frost Giant planet were incredible, not to mention the overall look of the frost giants, fuck all the realms were were easy on the eyes.
Enjoyed it. Had the same criticism about the slow development. As the fist segment on Asgard unfolded it felt like it was all going to be very dry, but it actually did a great setup for when the falls to Earf (I use the correctly Smithian spelling; F-this midgard stuff). Most nitpicks I could make involve the fact that Heimdall sees everything and yet misses some things. And that Nathalie Portman and Kat Dennings didn’t make out. But then that’s what makes it a tragedy of Shakespearian proportions.
I was surprised to like it as much as I did. Well worth the $6 matinee.
Saw it over the weekend. Was pretty disappointed. Thor’s crappy one liners during the opening fight scenes were cringe worthy. It got better from there but I’d read reviews saying that it was better than the first iron man and as good as the first spiderman. Not even close. It was pretty funny but Thor and Natalie Portman’s relationship was so contrived. Felt like they ended up together just because they were both good looking. Scenes with Odin and Loki owned face though, that’s what I was hoping most of the movie was going to be.
That’s all you have for nitpicks? Here are mine: he should have worn the helmet more. It would have been totally boss hog for him to be wearing the helmet when he got his powers back and from then on. Loki had his bad ass helmet the entire time they fought and it was great, but Thor should have had his, too. I understand why he didn’t wear the helmet, but whatever.
The part in the middle where Thor had no powers seemed a little too long, a little slow.
The movie should have ended with Thor and Loki trapped on Earth after Thor destroyed the Bifrost.
His boots sucked. I like the rest of the costume, but the boots sucked.
Volstag should have been much fatter, jollier and not so much of a quick to lick boots pussy. And he should have worn a helmet.
The Hawkeye cameo stank.
Otherwise, I really enjoyed the film.
Why, yes, I do read Kotaku. It’s a fine blog. What’s your point?
That’s right dude. Everything’s about you.
