I’m not a physicist and I’m not terrible familiar with the experimental set-up, so this could all be completely moot: but one of the articles mentioned that neutrinos can pass through matter. Were the two stations far enough apart that the neutrinos could take a straight-line distance that was shorter than the path following the curvature of the earth?

The two “stations” are ~700 km apart (good to 20 cm, not 20 m).
The distance used in the experiment is the “straight-line” distance.
