As I’ve mentioned before, I’m more into Star Trek than Star Wars. Why? Well, for one, the Trek fanbase just seems a little more rational — a little less, I dunno, constantly enraged about nothing.
Case in point, every time Lucas goes back and replaces some musty old puppet or terrible stop-action animation with CGI, Star Wars fans howl and rend their clothing like somebody has just thrown turpentine on the Mona Lisa. Star Trek fans on the other hand don’t really get that fussed about that kinda stuff. Every time an old Star Trek series is released in a new format they re-do the effects, and Trekkies just sort of shrug and go “hey yeah, that does look better. Cool.”
Also Star Wars guys all fly their spaceships all uptight like “traveling through hyperspace ain’t like dusting crops!” while Star Trek guys are all leeeaning back in their easy chairs and being all “Warp 5 Number One”.
Anyways, enough “Star Wars and Star Trek people” from my stand-up routine. Hit the jump to check out a video of what The Next Generation will look like on Blu-ray…
Mmm, now that’s some hot space jellyfish action right there.

So a fan who loses their sh*t when someone calls them a Trekkie instead of a Trekker is more rational than wanting people to just leave their beloved movie alone?
Oh, and this looks does look really good.
*does look really good. That’ll teach me to answer the phone when my boss calls.
Speaking as somebody who grew up watching Star Trek, I really, really can’t stand those people.
Q looks like Jason Segel.
Star Trekkers (is that right?) don’t seem to be too rational all the time. Just mention you liked JJ Abrams Star Trek around one. You may get slimed.
Hey, hey, hey J.J. Abrams made a great Star Wars movie!
In all seriousness, guilty.
As fed up as I am of Star Wars nerds being retarded, being a fan of something because of how its fanbase behaves might be one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard.
I wasn’t all that keen on seeing these released in Blu-ray – until I saw what had been done to the remastering. I enjoyed TNG a lot in its initial run – one of the few show the wife and I made sure we watched, or at least made sure we taped it. Hell, I even submitted a spec script for the show – which ended up being just before the last season since I dicked around with it for so long (but it did get me a pitch session for DS9, which was an experience). But over the years seeing reruns in their faded and murky glory gave the show a homogenized feel that made me wonder what I saw in the show. Now I’m pretty jazzed to get the Blu-rays.
I love the Blu-rays of TOS, where you get the option of both old and new versions of the effects. The TNG remasters look like they’re pretty damned faithful to the spirit of the originals, and we get some contrast in the scenes now.
As far as Trek fans losing their minds over stuff, yeah Abrams movie can set a lot of the old timers off (I enjoyed it – sue me), but if you want to see some of them really lose their shit go into a modeling forum and mention “grid lines – engraved or no?” and watch the magic happen.
To Star Wars fans — You’re right, you don’t get too worked about things. Thanks for showing me the way with this angry worked-up comments section.
The difference is that with Star Trek they are keeping the same effect only improved. With Star Wars, Lucas is adding crap that wasn’t there in the first place. Either way, Star Wars has been so run into the ground it should be locked in a vault for 30 years. Star Trek TNG is just flat-out boring as hell.
