Awkward Mario Can't Jump Away From This

So, a reader calling himself Jumpman sent us this link to a promotional picture from Nintendo of America the other day. It's supposed to be a contest winner being greeted at the door by Mario to collect his real life, full size Mario Kart, but Jumpman has a point: this is one awkward photo and stripped of context, it makes little to no sense.
