As we all know, some of the New 52 are being shown the door after eight issues and being replaced next month with a bunch of new books:
- "Earth 2", which gives James Robinson the Justice Society to play with again.
- "Batman Incorporated", and has Grant Morrison ever been missed.
- "World's Finest", written by Paul Levitz, who ran DC for almost three decades.
- "Dial H", written by China Mieville, basically DC's version of "Captain Universe".
- "G.I. Combat", bringing back the Unknown Solider, The Haunted Tank, and The Land That Time Forgot
- And "The Ravagers", a superhero book with Terra in it, so that'll be...interesting.
We pulled together some art from these books on the next slides. And, if nothing else, they'll look pretty. Out of all of them, though, we think "Dial H" might have the best shot at being good, if for no other reason than, damn, Boy Chimney is grotesque.

oh man chris burnham
Do GL and WW shop for pants at the same place?
You know, I have to admit, I’ve wondered about that.
I have extremely high hopes for Earth 2. I’m not really a James Robinson fanboy, but man, when he does something right, it’s just awesome. The Golden Age and Starman were some of the best comics I’ve ever read. Conversely, his Superman and Justice League stuff, while not some of the worst (I’ve read a lot of crappy crap crap), was sub-par at best (although I loved his last issue of Justice League of America was great, and I wish we could have seen of the ideas in it fleshed out before the end of the old DCU).
He really does his best with the Golden Agers and the characters outside the Big Three. I’ve always wondered why he was never given another Golden Age character to play with after “Starman”.
see, i think the reason why starman was so good was because it was about being a legacy hero and about the…beauty, for lack of a better word, of the DCU’s 60+ year existence. I think Robinson does his best work when he’s given something to revere, and that’s why I’m reluctant on earth 2.
Keep in mind, though, Robinson has redefined the JSA before: that’s what “The Golden Age” was all about. And he’s willing to throw out what doesn’t work, or at least acknowledge it: this is the guy who turned the incredibly stupid Red Bee into a character you actually felt a little bad for.
Apropos of nothing, I worked at DC briefly, and my office was right across from Paul Levitz’. He was the nicest guy there, clearly loved his job, and had an office full of cool stuff. He’s so in love with comics, and I have high hopes for a book written by him.
i like the dude, but his legion stuff was impenetrable, and i have read x-men comics continuously for 15 years.
