When we reviewed “Avengers Vs. X-Men #1″, the conversation in the comments turned almost immediately to who the book was going to “shockingly” kill. It was brutal, bloodthirsty, and casual.
So we thought we’d improve it by turning it into a contest.
The prize? The graphic novel of your choice, up to $30. Seriously, nail this and we’ll buy you the prize from your FLCS.
Here’s the deal: guess who’s going to die, and what issue their death will land on. If two people guess the same character, whoever posted the comment first wins it. Guessing “nobody” is a valid choice; if nobody gets the issue, we’ll go by who guessed the character.
We’ve got the line-up broken out by Marvel themselves up there. Go to it.

War Machine. Issue 4.
Cyclops in the last issue.
Hope. Final Issue.
That was my initial guess but it felt a little on the nose. Totally unsurprised if you’re right.
DC’s New 52 sales numbers.
Emma Frost Issue 5
Ben Grimm bites it at the end of the penultimate issue.
Beast. Final issue.
It’s got to be a mutant to bring this series to a screeching halt. However, it doesn’t have to be necessarily on the X-Men side….Beast. Second to last issue.
Sorry to jump back in but if my initial guess is wrong: Uncle Ben comes back to life! Last issue derp
I just tried to pick someone who hasn’t already died once or twice already. I mean look at the bracket, how many of these cats HAVEN’T been offed before?
They haven’t bumped off Rulk yet, but I think that’s pretty much it.
Also going with Cyclops, 5th issue.
i like beast as a catalyst for cyclops’ self-sacrifice. beast in the second to last, cyclops in the last.
Beast in issue 10
Cyclops, second to last issue, sacrificing himself to restart mutantkind somehow. Last issue will be the fallout and Wolverine turning on the Avengers in grief.
red hulk issue 5
Namor, issue 9.
Iron Fist, issue 5
While my gut tells me Namor will die, I suspect that they have even less respect for Mockingbird and Giantman.
So my official guess: Mockingbird, last page of issue 3.
(But I don’t think it will be the last death of the series)
I’m going to say Colossus in the second to last issue. Using the demon behind the Juggernaught to go head-to-head with the Phoenix as a delaying tactic. It frees up the Juggernaught to go on to someone else (maybe even back to Marko) and could possibly kick-off a mini where Magik has to go into the Netherworld to bring back her brother.
Spider-Woman final issue.
It should be someone who’s been connected with both teams through the years (and Spider-Woman was roughly spun into X-tales back when Claremont was writing both books at the same time), but Beast and Wolverine are too popular. Beyond that, Bendis brought Jessica Drew back to some prominence starting in his run on Alias, so since he’s leaving the Avengers stories, he’s taking her with him.
I would hate to see this happen, but I would be more inclined to believe this scenario with Jessica Jones. Granted, he DID bring Drew back to some prominence, but he created Jones and has been the only voice for her (right?). Think of the ramifications this would have on Luke Cage, who would then be a single father (unless the baby actually DOES turn out to be a Skrull sleeper, and this has just been the LONGEST reveal ever).
After reading this week’s New Avengers it simply HAS to be either Luke Cage or Jessica Jones. You don’t spend that much time establishing how much they love each other unless you’re going for the big emotional payoff later on.
Luke Cage. See recent New Avengers for foreshadowing.
A little bit of me every day. Every episode.
Frowndy face.
Emma Frost, last issue.
The Vision… Issue 4, after getting riled up and distracted by an insensitive comment about the Scarlet Witch
Probably a loooong shot (read: never going to happen), but I’m saying a newly resurrected Jean Grey will come back in the story and then die in issue 12.
Actually, jbow, I think you’re absolutely right that Jean Grey is coming back.
Doctor Strange, issue 5
Protector, issue 5.
The Marvel Boy mini was great, but now nobody knows what to do with Noh Varr. Turning him into Protector? Lame. Captain Marvel is coming back in Secret Avengers? Ms. Marvel is changing her name to Captain Marvel and getting her own series? Protector has no place and no purpose.
The only other two people I could possibly see it happening to are Captain Britain or Valkyrie. Both are easily replaceable. Marvel has precious few recognizable African American (or just African in Black Panther’s case) characters, so I doubt he, War Machine or Luke Cage will be put to pasture (especially War Machine since he’s all up in the Iron Man movies.
Isn’t the above graphic missing some characters? I know from other promotional materials that X-Men like Gambit, Rogue, Storm, Psylocke, Angel, Magik, Iceman, and Warpath will all be in the mix. Plus I’m assuming Scarlet Witch is an option for the axe.
My vote, however, goes to Protector, issue 7.
I pulled it directly from the first issue: I’m assuming they’ll add more, but I’ll update it as necessary.
Captain America always dies…so I’m going with Wolverine dies episode 7
Guess I’ll take the dark horse “nobody”!
Binary/Ms. Marvel in Secret Avengers #28
Kenny dies every issue.
Seriously, nobody said “nobody” yet, so I’m saying “nobody” (it’s like the Price is Right when the smartass bets $1).
Whoops, Ergo locked it…dang…
Scarlet witch, issue 10
Iron Fist, issue 6
Wolverine, penultimate issue.
Hope, second to last issue.
Red Hulk – Second to the last issue
Cyclops in Issue 11. (Most likely they’ll also kill off Hope in issue 12, with Wolverine doing the deed.)
No one dies. I am guessing that Hope and the lights join with the Phoenix force in issue12 to repower the mutants then fly off. Either Cyclops or Scarlet Witch take kenji’s place, maybe both if they want to keep Oroya around to anoy Quentin Quire.
Ms. Marvel, ‘killed’ (comatose) via Rogue. Please make my childish need from the 90′s X-Men cartoon a reality!
Iron Fist (Danny Rand) issue 11. I came to this conclusion due to the outline in the solicits being a male in a pretty Iron Fist kinda pose, plus if you look at the cover for ‘Defenders #11′ there is an outline around the tiny picture of Iron Fist that the others don’t have, almost like they have pasted in an image of the regular Iron Fist, as I suspect that post AvX Hope will be the new Iron Fist.
I’m guessing Professor X in issue #11. He loves his kids so he would probably be willing to sacrifice himself for them. Also, it would be a good way for everyone to come to their senses. As a member of the Illuminati, even many Avengers like him.
AAAAAAAAAAND YOU NAILED IT!
Professor X in issue 12
Since he hasn’t been around much, and I wanna see Emma and Scott live I say the Protector, issue 11
Plus all the stronger bets are taken
