We don’t know which is weirder: that Universal sunk over $200 million into a movie about the board game battleship or that it opened in the #1 spot in 24 out of 26 countries overseas. We’ll have to wait until May 18th for Peter Berg’s Transformers On A Boat Battleship to open in the US, but for now we have a couple of clips to see what all the fuss is about.
The first clip shows the alien’s face, which kills the suspense but oh well. Who expects suspense, development, or subtlety from a Transformers clone anyway? As an added bonus, we also get to see Rihanna talk about how her dad knew this day would come. If only we had listened to Rihanna’s dad.
The second clip follows model and Gisele-admirer Brooklyn Decker on her quest for a chicken burrito. Unfortunately, she gets rebuffed by a bartender who will not countenance any burrito requests from gorgeous women. Yeah, because if Brooklyn Decker asks a bartender for something on the menu, he’s going to be rude about it. To Brooklyn Decker. Sure. She’s experienced that before. Guys exhibit an unprovoked bad attitude towards Brooklyn Decker all the time. And yes, I find that scene more unbelievable than the one with the alien.

“it opened in the #1 spot in 24 out of 26 countries overseas.”
Faith in humanity: fucking lost.
Does anybody know the reason this is being released last in the US? Are they hoping international buzz will increase US ticket sales?
Here’s my theory: People like to run with the crowd. When a movie has a poor opening, people are even less likely to see it. Since this movie already opened overseas, any article on it opening in America will have to include the overall dollar total which will disguise shortcomings in the US opening.
This is the final nail. When they release a clip that not only shows the alien, but includes so much terrible dialogue…why am I wasting my time with this, AFMG said it pretty well.
I watched this in New Zealand last week, it’s predictably low brow, but if you have a few drinks before you see it it’s quite fun.
