So “Hitman: Absolution”, a game that still has a nebulous at best release date, has followed up the arcane ritual of video game releasing by announcing its pre-order bonuses. And they are, of course, various types of weapons. There’s also, of course, a deluxe edition where for twenty extra bucks, you get the game in a case that won’t fit on your shelf, an art book, and a case of virtual weapons.
We’re excited to see what this reboot of “Hitman” will play like, but we’ve got to admit, getting a neat pistol in the game doesn’t really make us want to pre-order the game from one retailer or another.
How about you? Do you care about pre-order bonuses? Do they influence your buying decisions? Or is it more about where you can get the game?

Typically, no. I *was* intrigued by the pre-order bonus for Borderlands 2 though. Where in 60 to 90 days you’ll get an additional class for free rather than having to pay for the DLC. In terms of various weapons or “new moves” (like you’re seeing in the Prototype 2 commercials), i don’t care. They are typically shit and out-leveled quickly.
The pre-order bonus for B2 is the only one that has me convinced, I haven’t pre-order anything until this
I usually preorder everything I want with Amazon but when they offer $10 credit as a preorder bonus I definitely make it a point to do so. More guns, equipment, etc is nice but it doesn’t influence me to preorder as much.
Depends what it is, but I’m pretty much over DLC incentives now. Getting the B2K maps for free with Battlefield 3 Limited Edition was cool, but most preorder stuff becomes available not long after release now (in BF3′s case, for free as well), making it kind of pointless
I’ll also add Arkham Asylums preorder DLC was a crock of shit and pretty annoying
I rarely pre-order – it has to be a super must-have game that I’m not willing to wait a few months for the prices to go down.
What I think is very important is that the core game (no pre-order, no DLC bells and whistles) be a solid buy. I don’t ever want to be punished by not pre-ordering, or not buying additional DLC. So far, from my experience, only one game did this – that god-awful Fable 3. Whoever is behind that game should be dragged out on the street and tasered.
Pre-order incentives are the only reason I pre-order. Otherwise I just wait till the game is out for a week or so. I never care that I stop using whatever free guns I get after 5 levels, I just like knowing I got some bonus for buying a game I was going to buy anyway.
I like when different places offer different bonuses too. Like when Best Buy offered playable Hulk and Gamestop had Juggernaut for Ultimate Alliance 2. Just as long as Gamestop stops with those horrible pre-order commercials. The ones where they voice over game footage to make them say wacky stuff. Ugh,
I don’t pre-order based on DLC or any sort of bonus offering. I preorder if it’s a game I think they might actually either not stock or run out of … so, yeah, I’ve only pre-ordered a few games.
Sorry to get all Carlin, but isn’t pre-ordering just ordering? Order before it comes out or after it comes out, but it’s still ordering. Pre-ordering is the process of deciding if you’re going to order it or not. As soon as you’ve paid for it.. BAM. You’ve ordered it.
I have a friend who pirates all his games anyway, and he would like to remind you that he is not me.
Actually, GameStop had a rough time of it because people would drop five bucks on a preorder and then not show up when the game came out.
I used to get angry about all the preorder bs, but then I caved and started preordering games to get the stupid gun or the hat. Then I stopped caring and just buy a game when I feel like it. Then every once in a while a game comes along that makes me hate the way the whole preordering system works. Games like Dragon Age 2, Arkham City, Mass Effect 2 and to a lesser degree 3, Tiger Woods 2012 and the latest CoD. Those are just a few off the top of my head that are obviously money grabs and thats what ticks me off the most. We’re shelling out 65 bucks for your game, do you really need the 5 bucks a week early to earn interest for you?
You forgot to finish the sentence so I’ll do it for you:
“There’s also, of course, a deluxe edition where for twenty extra bucks, you get the game in a case that won’t fit on your shelf, an art…ificial insemination at home kit, and a still of a bald Timothy Olyphant punching himself in the nuts for making a horrible move.”
Bonus can be cool, but I don’t care much. If I’m already planing on getting the game, like with Arkham City or Saints Row 3, I’ll preorder but its really just to get something free that I know they’ll release later for a price. The only case where I was glad I pre-ordered was Ghostbusers, as those bonuses never appeared later for sale (except on ebay).
Never. But I also always wait a few months before buying anything, since the price drops so fast (especially on PC, which is the only system I have). Last time I spent $50 on a game was Starcraft 2.
I think I’ve got maybe 2 pre-order bonuses in my life, so no, not really. One was a pretty sweet Harvest Moon cow though.
By the by, where are all the writers getting those sweet stars beside their names? Where’s my star dammit!
You get paid in Magic booster packs! Stop whining!
The Borderlands 2 bonuses where enough to convince me and I don’t even spend more than 10 bucks on steam games.
