There are a few franchises it’s pretty easy to hate because they’re basically the same goddamn thing year after year after year. Nintendo at least only throws a new Mario or Zelda game at us every two or three years, and Pokemon isn’t aimed at adults. But yearly punching bag Madden comes to mind, and also “Call of Duty”.
But it was consistent: “Call of Duty” came out yearly and outsold the one before it. But thankfully, not anymore.
OK, so it’s not a disaster, per se: it’s running about 4.2% behind the sales of “Black Ops”, and it’s still sold millions upon millions of copies. They believe it’s because less hardcore gamers aren’t buying as many games as they used to, but maybe it’s simply that familiarity breeds contempt: it’s not like the COD games have actually changed much (or at all) since the PSOne days. This is a franchise where an engine switch happens once a console generation.
Of course, it could also be a blip. We hope not. Activision could use a lesson in not beating a franchise into the floor.

PSOne days? Didn’t the first COD come out in 2003?
Either way, this news makes me very happy.
It did. I tend to conflate COD and “Medal of Honor” because they’re basically the same f***ing game.
I figured as much. And no one can blame you.
down 4.2% is still pretty good numbers for a game that sells like COD. sure, if they released every other year they’d sell more per game but at half the rate.
also, why is it good news that they didn’t sell as much? you care cause why?
If the sales slip maybe they will actually innovate and make the game better instead of just rehashing the same game every year.
Because “Call of Duty” is awful and the designers don’t care anymore. If this shakes them up, that would be a good thing. Also if the sales slip it means fewer crappy knockoffs, also a good thing.
I’m pretty sure its because its basically a weapons and map pack instead of a new game. I’ve played every call of duty starting with the original on pc so its not like I hate the franchise, but this last one didnt hold my interest very long. I see my friends playing it whenever they sign on xbox, but for me its become way too repetitive to hold my interest. I dont think I’m even going to bother buying the next one.
I understand the multiplayer appeal, but the single-player campaign on MW3 made me want to go down to Infinity Ward and beat them with a copy of Half-Life.
I was talking about the multiplayer aspect. Because since the first MW the games havent been about single player. It was getting more obvious every game but by MW3 I’m pretty sure it was just included as something to do in case the servers ever went down for a couple hours.
