I’m reading “Avengers Vs. X-Men”, but I do it not out of joy or interest but out of obligation. I suspect many readers are the same way. “God, fine, Marvel, I will read your crossover to make sense of the other books I read!”
Still, even by crossover standards, “VS” came off as a huge slap to the face. Oh, we’re not going to put the actual fights in the actual book! We expect you to buy another six issues to get the actual fun parts of the book!
What Marvel didn’t seem to realize, though, is that they’re putting out a book that’s actually a lot more compelling and interesting than their actual crossover. In fact, if you just want to read the plot summary on Wikipedia, I’d recommend ditching “Avengers Vs. X-Men” altogether and just buying “VS”.
Why?
#5) VS. Is Better Written
Part of this is just that the writers here are under far less editorial obligation than the AvX writing room: he knows who has to fight, and who has to win, so his job is just to fill in the blanks and maybe toss in the occasional plot crumb to tie in what’s a deliberately over-the-top book.
#4) VS. Is Way Less Dour and Self-Serious
In fact, this book is funny, as you can tell from the FAQ that opens it. Nobody is taking this remotely seriously, and the book is sprinkled with one-liners and “Fun Facts”, like how much it’ll cost “S.H.I.E.L.D.” to repair the Helicarrier after Namor punches Ben Grimm through it.
#3) The Fights Are Well-Drawn
Granted, the art in the main book is no slouch, but you can feel Kubert and Immonen enjoying themselves with every panel. This is what artists who love comics love to draw, and frankly, it shows.

Before I even read the list (which is a good one btw), by first thought was, “Well, the reason it’s better is because it is the actual ‘Vs.’ part.”
This is true!
I’ll give you points 3 and 4, but that’s it. I picked up Vs. because of the Jason Aaron story, and I do not feel like my money was well spent.
Let’s look at the fights.
Iron Man vs. Magneto. Tony pulls a deus ex machina out of his pants and is able to transfer the magnetic force of Jupiter through satellites into his armor? Then Magneto destroys one of the satellites, uses the pieces to form armor around him, and now he is cosmically powered and can funnel planetary magnetic forces throughout the cosmos into himself? REALLY? The ONLY way that Tony comes out victorious in this battle is because of feedback or some shit when the Phoenix Force destroys a planet and Magneto “feels” it. Ugh. I loved what Aaron did with Wolverine, and Wolverine & the X-Men is my favorite mutant book since the split. I enjoyed the script for the most part (the fun facts made me chuckle…magnetic counting powers, heh), but the fight itself was a joke.
The Thing /Namor fight was less absurd, but it never ended! Ben punched Namor out of the water then walked away. Namor wasn’t even knocked out! He was diving (looked like diving, not falling) back into the water as Ben was leaving.
TKOs are still KOs, but these were cheap wins. Yes, the art was pretty damn wonderful, but between this and New Avengers, the only two new books I bought this week, I felt like the week was a total waste.
I’m hoping this event will be the opposite of current events like Blackest Night, Siege or Secret Invasion. I thought those things started out wonderfully but had lackluster endings.
