How much would you pay for a musty old lump of yak hair? Does $172,000 sound fair? Okay, what if that musty lump of yak hair was actually a Chewbacca headpiece used in the original Star Wars trilogy?
The last Chewbacca mask not hidden away in one of George Lucas’ vaults recently sold at auction. For their sizeable chunk of cash the buyer got the mask, and autographed photos from Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew and Chewie costume designer Stuart Freeborn. Also, hopefully a can of Febreze to spray the thing with.
It may sound like a lot of money for an old movie prop, but I dunno — if I ever get to a place where I can drop 172k on frivolous crap, I’d totally be up for wandering around abandoned Tunisian Star Wars sets in a very expensive Wookiee outfit. Hmmm, I wonder if you’re allowed to wear a Wookiee head while taking your pilot’s test.

On a somewhat related note, EA and Bioware made the official announcement today that as of this fall, Star Wars: The Old Republic (that, SWTOR for you cool kids out there) will be F2P.
With a brand as big as Star Wars not even able to make the monthly subscription model work anymore, it’s clear that WoW is now the exception to the rule in the MMO world.
