So, Borderlands 2 is going have a character with a special beginner-friendly skill tree, which will grant various difficulty skirting perks (such as the ability to kill stuff without actually hitting it). The idea is that this will let players new to the game have some co-op fun with veteran players.
Sounds like a good idea to me — unfortunately in an interview with Eurogamer, Borderlands 2 designer John Hemingway went and referred to it as “the girlfriend skill tree”. Internet outrage ensued, which is…weird, because this past generation the gaming industry was all about the girlfriend mode.
Up until recently legendary Nintendo game-making pixie Shigeru Miyamoto would frequently talk about his “Wife-o-meter”. Basically, if he wanted to gauge whether a new casual game was casual enough he’d give it to his wife to play. Developers like Zynga and PopCap would constantly brag about the percent of their players were women. These boasts were never phrased in a “we made a really good game that just so happened to attract a large number of women” sort of way — it was always “we targeted women with our accessible, non-threatening games and succeeded. Hooray for a plan well-executed!”
But now girlfriend modes are apparently taboo. Good. Women gamers shouldn’t have to be carefully courted or tricked into playing games. They shouldn’t be rallied behind, railed against or masturbated over. Women gamers are just gamers that happen to smell good.
By the way ladies, since you aren’t using it anyways, is it okay if I borrow Borderlands 2′s girlfriend mode and rename it “rugged dudes who nonetheless suck at shooters” mode?

They shouldn’t be rallied behind, railed against or *masturbated over.*
I’d like to see you try and stop me.
You don’t want to challenge me to that.
Dude’s got hobnailed boots and a hard right kick. You really don’t.
What a relief…sexism is over.
I can’t wait to unlock the bareback achievement…
Girlfriend mode exists. You just can’t talk about it. I played on a PVP WoW server with my GF and now wife for a year. She thinks she’s amazing at pvp. I think she was just bait.
You could rename it what Activision calls it, “Call of Duty”
You mean we have to go back to calling easy mode easy mode instead of girlfriend mode? Aww shucks.
This must be how Birch feels about Mass Effect cause I dont get this at all. They’re not going out of their way disrespecting female gamers, they made an easier skill tree to specifically help inexperienced fps players dig into their game in co-op. So the devs had an unfortunate nickname for it that they used among themselves. What the fuck is the big deal?
If you’re actually “outraged” by this, go read the Progressive story and then go fuck yourself.
All this is going to do is encourage my girlfriend to play more video games with me. And thats going to lead to more street fighter. Then she’ll get a lucky win and I’ll never hear the end of it. It was 4 fucking years ago Jenn and you were Sagat! Get over yourself!
Oh sweet god I have the same issue. That Tiger bullshit, and she had me in the corner.
PC bullshit. “Girlfriend mode” as a compliment as far as I’m concerned. This whole argument presupposes that playing difficult video games is a virtue of some kind. One of the things I admire about women is that they don’t waste hours a day playing video games like I do, and if they do, they tend to want the kind of experience where they can just pick up the damn controller and play. It reminds me of when Conan O’Brien compared setting up his Skyrim character to doing his taxes. Women aren’t into that shit as much as men are, and what’s wrong with that? And what’s wrong with video game marketers being aware of it?
I see no issue at all with this. This is not for girl gamers nor should it even apply to them. It is for the girlfriend who DOESN’T play games or even a guy who normally doesn’t play. Girlfriend mode is funny but girls are always hyper sensitive of what they deem “sexist”. Hell I opened a door for a girl and she started getting upset calling me sexist because “she can open the damn door herself.” All in all this is for non-gamers so they don’t just repeatedly die and get frustrated what is wrong with that?
