We’ve talked about Extermination before. In fact, I loved the first issue. And it’s been growing on me like a fungus ever since.
What makes Simon Spurrier’s irreverent take on superheroes and supervillains after the end work is that he earns his irreverence, unlike Mark Millar, who seems to write books on the premise that everybody hates superheroes and only bastards would want to be them. He actually bothers to justify the behavior of Nox and the Red Reaper is that the former has a backstory that’s revealing he had some pretty serious problems even before aliens showed up and killed most of humanity, and the former makes no apologies whatsoever for being utterly ruthless.
That’s really the thing: they’re both horrible in their own way, but both equally sympathetic. Reaper is getting used to the realities of kill or be killed a lot faster than Nox, but he’s smart enough to realize that makes Nox much, much more dangerous than he could ever be. At the same time, Reaper is also the comic relief; it’s a hard balance to strike and it works well.
Some Others I Liked This Week:
Wonder Woman #12: You need to buy this issue if for no other reason than it ends on a killer cliffhanger. We finally see what Azzarello’s really been up to this last year and it’s a doozy.
Before Watchmen: Rorschach #1: Before Watchmen has been a mixed to negative bag for me with Minutemen being the only bright spot. But this book has a solid launch establishing that Rorschach is not an unbeatable badass… yet. That said most of the other books had a great first issue too, so we’ll see with issue #2. But I’m willing to give it a second issue.
What about you? What were some of your favorites this week?

and a bone claws joke! i’m exceedingly pumped about legacy now that spurrier’s taking over.
Yeah. I have to admit, I don’t read X-Books as a rule, but I will read a Si Spurrier X-book.
will check out this book based on your recommendation – plus it sounds like something I’d be into.
It’s really worth it. If nothing else the Red Reaper is hysterical.
I actually just read this one. Liked it a lot, too. Also finished the new Batwoman. Anyone else have a hard time following the ridiculous panel layouts in that book? Most of the time they make sense, but occasionally it’s just a shotgun blast of panels on a page.
I enjoyed The Walking Dead quite a bit this week. Did anyone else notice how much older Carl and Sophia looked when they had that panel together? Seems like it’s going to be some time before we see her and Maggie, hopefully something huge is on the horizon. I got the impression that Kirkman was really trying to pump up Carl this week, maybe even setting up a timejump forward to when he’s older. Probably way off, but it could liven up the book a little now that it’s been a bit stale.
That would be actually a good thing.
i enjoyed this week’s TWD as well. now that things are getting rolling again in terms of the storyline, it’s going to feel like years between issues. I really feel it should be a bi-weekly series… maybe that’s partly due to my own selfish reasons of wanting more, but also partly because 30 days is too long to wait in between issues. Imagine if every episode of Breaking Bad had 30 days between them… you’d go nuts! you’d also forget what happened in the last episodes.
I doubt Kirkman would give us a flash forward to an older Carl. as cool and as interesting as it would be, I just don’t see it happening.
Wonder Woman was also FREAKING AMAZING this week.
My reaction to the last page: “HOLY F***ING S***!” Also, goddamn zero issues!
AvX still plods just a little. It’s not that I think they’ve done some terrible disservice (see “Civil War”), more that the number of revelations are few and far between.
And I hate that the Avengers issue was quite a bit behind the AvX arc.
I currently am enjoying XForce the most. It’s a nice broad concept with enough minor jolts to keep me engaged.
I missed the previous issue of Wonder Woman, so I had to nab that too. (It sure felt like a long time between issues!) I’ll have to read both tonight.
Let us know what you thought.
I picked up Extermination #1 because of the recommendation and I’m digging it. Gonna catch up on the rest this weekend. Good call.
