Looking over the schedule, it’s a fairly light Wednesday for me, comics-wise. Here’s what I’m absolutely picking up tomorrow:
Extermination #4
Si Spurrier’s post-apocalyptic buddy cop movie starring a deeply screwed up Batman satire and a snarky dime-store Doctor Doom gets better with every single issue. I’m waiting for this thing to make a false step and yet it never does. Funny on one page, disturbing on the next, great all around: It’s superhero comics being gross and weird without being stupid.
Sword of Sorcery #0
Partially because I’m giving DC’s new books a shot. Partially because I actually remember liking the Amethyst books as a kid. And partially because the title amuses me.
I do have to admit, I am happy DC is trying more fantasy comics: The genre is underrepresented.
Godzilla: Half Century War #2
I found the first issue to be some pretty impressive comics from James Stokoe, big and goofy enough to feel like Godzilla while being hard and gritty enough to get across what one soldier feels in what will likely become a very personal war against an uncaring giant lizard. If Stokoe can keep it up, it’ll be a great series.
Let us know what you’re interested in in the comments, and here’s the full list for Wednesday if you need to browse for some reminders.

As much as the Walking Dead seems stuck in a cycle of repetition, when it’s delayed a week or two I miss the hell out of it. I’d be interested in hearing someone who hasn’t read any of it up untill now, and then reading the entire series in a month or so and seeing if it’s starting to drag for them as wel or if it’s just those of us on the month to month.
I’ll have to check out Extermination, I can’t remember reading any BOOM titles before. Is this a miniseries or an ongoing?
I missed a couple issues of Darth Vader and the Ghost Prison, but might check out the final issue as I did really enjoy the first two (bad move?).
Is this Thanos The Last Threat one shot the remnants of what was supposed to be the Thanos miniseries?
Finally, I’ll be picking up X-Factor.
Been pretty disillusioned with comics lately, but thankfully just received Y The Last Man in the mail and a quick re-read should restore my faith in the genre.
Extermination is an ongoing. Just pick up the first issue, since it’s a buck.
Haven’t been following Ghost Prison, but the hardcore Wars fans seem to really like it, and Dark Horse does a good job with the SW comics in general. As for Thanos… I’m not sure. I hope so,
big fan of TWD from almost-the beginning, I recently re-read the entire series from the get go. I was noticing it kind of dragged for me in the last 30 issues or so, but it didn’t do that at all once I read it again from the start. actually went quite quickly. I think that once you jump to reading single issues monthly, it understandably begins to slow for the reader.
Extermination sounds like a possibility. Intriguing.
I remember Amethyst – Princess of Gem World, and I remember thinking “They aren’t aiming for guys with this one”. Don’t think I ever cracked a single page. A name change, even to one so… um… oy(!)… is an improvement.
A lot of DC #0′s on that list that have been out a while. Are these just variant cover republications?
So far for me: Maybe the Winter Soldier TPB, I’m a sucker for Thanos–so maybe that one. Not seeing much else, but it’s always hard for me to pick off a list, easier to pick off shelves (or the Comixology app).
Generally the zero issues are intended to be origin stories for the books in publication, wrap-ups for the books getting the ax, and introduction for the next wave. It’s been… middling to me.
That would explain Batwoman #0, when I’d heard it had been cancelled.
My horizons are rather narrow. These days this is pretty much the only place i talk comics.
We live to serve!
I checked Extermination out due to Dan’s recommendation and found the 1st three issues to be excellent. loved every minute of it.
my only possible complaint is that the plot seems a bit manufactured, and light. I wanted more detail, more backstory. I felt the same way with Waid’s Irredeemable / Incorruptible storylines… I absolutely loved them in the beginning, but towards the end I was like “where the fuck is he taking this thing?!” much like LOST. at the end of the 10th TP I was scratching my head, wondering how it got so convoluted. I hope Spurrier doesn’t mess with a good thing with Extermination. I want to see more lost heroes.
How is Hypernaturals, anyone check that book out?
I’ve read a few issues. It’s not bad. It’s basically the Legion of Super Heroes except a bit grittier. It’s a fun read but I’m not sure I’m sticking with it.
Walking Dead, Extermination (yay!), Daredevil, Avengers, Dark Horse Presents and SW: Ghost Prison for me.
I’m also going to pick up the zero issues for all the lantern series. I’m intrigued about the Third Army event even though I haven’t read any of the Lanterns. Hopefully it won’t be a bust on my wallet!
I’ll pick up New Guardians just because I’ve been following it. The Third Army stuff is actually kind of interesting but I’m not sure how I feel about it yet.
