I put “Director’s Cut” in quotes for two reasons:
1) Nolan doesn’t put together director’s cuts. He’s rarely in a situation where he doesn’t have final cut in the first place, and when he doesn’t, he’s good about working with studios to come up with a cut he’s satisfied with. He rarely even has deleted scenes to put on the disc.
2) I seriously doubt Nolan has anything whatsoever to do with this.
“Director’s Cut” used to mean that the director was brought back for the DVD to put together his version of the movie. This could be a good thing, like when Robert Wise was finally allowed to put together his version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, turning it from a total stinkburger to just an overly long and overwrought episode of the original series. It could be a bad thing, like Ridley Scott’s not-terrible but weird cut of Alien.
No, this smells of “cash-in”. Worse, it’s a bad idea.
By all accounts, what’s missing out of the movie is thirty minutes or so detailing Bane’s origin that we already told you about.
So, yeah, the studio wants to cut that back in on the DVD. Into a movie that was nearly three hours long already.
Personally? I think cut footage was generally cut for a reason, and I doubt this is any exception. By all means, put the footage on the disc, I want to see it. Just don’t cut it into the movie.

I want to get Christian Bale to autograph my DVD saying “Abed is Batman now.”
‘When your Blu-Ray player is in ashes (due to overheating from playing this entire film) then you have my permission to die.”
WB finally went up to Nolan and said ‘Does it feel like you’re in charge’
Fuck it. Cut it in and give me branching access to the OG and “DC”. It’s a menu option not rocket science.
1) How was the director’s cut of Alien weird? 2) I agree that we should have the option to watch either version which would be relatively simple, like making the theatrical and unrated versions. Just I hope they don’t call it that, because that trick usually goes along with shit movies.
Have you seen it? The missing three minutes make a difference. It’s just… off. They don’t make a difference to the overall effectiveness of the film, but there’s just something unsettling about it, and not the way the movie is supposed to be.
Can we get the scene cut back in where Bane arrives on Wall Street and the pimp goes “SAY JIM, THAT’S A BAD OUT-FIT! WOOO!”
No, but I’d kill for a Gordon Gekko cameo.
If it has the original audio, and not Bane the Elder God blasting my ears, I’ll be all for it. Who cares if it’s too long, it’s a DVD! Pause it halfway through, make a pizza, drop the kids off at the pool, and then finish it off!
As long as the Blu-Ray/DVD has both the “Directors Cut” and the Theatrical Cut, then who cares if they cut it in?
There’s a big difference between releasing it in theaters and on DVD. For example, I could probably never have sat through the Director’s Cut of Watchmen in theaters, but the added footage made it an overall better film when released on DVD. I’ll give this a watch though.
I say good, if it ends up lasting 4hours I don’t care as log as it takes the time to fill all that character development holes.
I don’t blame Nolan, he had to make another movie completely after Ledger died.
