Recently, I’ve been replaying Hitman: Blood Money, both to compare it to the next game in the series hitting in November and also because I played the demo six years ago and just never got around to buying the game. And, hey, it’s an old game on Steam, so it was dirt cheap.
There’s a lot to love about the game: Sneaking up on your target and strangling them is a lot of fun, and figuring out the “accidents” in the game is a hoot in of itself.
But I’d forgotten about the game’s notorious AI, and quickly found myself, in my initial runs of each level, playing it in a way IO Interactive probably never intended.
Namely, I tried to figure out how little it would take to get the guards to start shooting me.
The game does have pretty good AI in most respects, but in this one, it’s more sheer comedy than anything else. Sometimes it makes sense, if the response is a bit drastic: Trespass in a criminal’s house and of course his guards are going to try to kill you.
But I found pretty quickly that you can piss off the guards for no obvious reason whatsoever and it’s hilarious. The words “proportionate response” do not exist in the Hitman universe. So far I’ve gotten shot by police officers for walking into a bar without a costume, stepping onto a stage without wearing a costume, being in a kitchen while wearing a costume, getting behind a bar dressed as a waiter, not putting down a cake, standing next to a yappy dog, and flipping a light switch on and off enough to annoy a passer-by, who then gets a police officer to shoot me.
It shouldn’t be this funny, but it is. I kind of hope Hitman: Absolution doesn’t “fix” this because while it’s mildly annoying at first, it rapidly becomes hilarious, especially since you’ll likely be restarting the level a few times to find the best possible solution to a few tough problems.
Either that or make playing with a light switch a killing offense.

My mind’s drawing a blank in terms of my personal experience, but I once saw a video of an AI glitch in Dead Space that made me laugh a lot. It was the part in chapter 10 where Isaac’s prepping the shuttle for Kyne, but then gets attacked by the Hunter and a bunch of twitchers. After you kill the Hunter by burning it with the shuttle’s engine (Alien!), the twitchers all hightail it, and occasionally act a little odd while they’re leaving. And in this video… well, here: [www.youtube.com]
Hitman: Blood Money is a surprisingly hard game. I remember going loco during the level where you’re amongst a crowd of people and just going full retard on all of their asses.
It’s at root a puzzle game. Once you crack the level, it’s one of the most satisfying things I have ever played.
Driver. The cops. Flying into the air high above the buildings and off of the map. In fact, if a car is on it’s side and you run into the roof of the car with either corner of your vehicles front bumper, 1 of 3 things will happen. The car on its side will fly into the air. You will fly into the air. Both you and the car will fly into the air.
It works particularly well if you run the corner of your car into the light bar of a cop car stuck on its side. Try at varying speeds for different affects and enjoy.
My favorite car-related break with reality is Borderlands. Melee a car. You’ll see what I mean.
Climbing the fucking mountains in Skyrim. They’re right there! The slope is not that steep! FUCK!
Ever heard Eddie Izzard’s routine about salmon? “And leap and leap and leap and leap…”
The Brutes, Grunts, and Marines in Halo 3 were pretty good when you had the IWHBYD Skull turned on. The Grunt right at the very end of Halo 3 just before you make the jump to Forward Unto Dawn is an especially good one, as well as the Marines in the mission Crow’s Nest.
I’ll never forget the time I played RE4 and during an in-game cut scene between Leon and Krauser, Krauser ran around Leon in circles as he talked. “Just trying to have fun” was the line.
Couldn’t have said it better.
I haven’t played all of the Hitman games, but on the first two, I enjoyed that you could be stealthy if you wanted, but you could also just run and gun if you decided to say “F this I just want to complete the level”. I liked having either option.
Also, Timothy Oliphant in the movie. HA HA! That movie was dreadful.
