If you want a demonstration of the gulf between Japanese gamers and Western gamers, look no further than the fact that this game has been taking a beating at the hands of the Western press, while it becomes only the thirty-third game in Famitsu’s history to pull a 39/40. According to Famitsu, this game is as good as A Link To The Past.
Where do I fall, three hours in? I find myself asking why a game so far this mediocre is getting reviews of high praise or pure rage.
There are no surprises here. The story is insane and a bit dim-witted, if adorably so, the gameplay is action-heavy, and the controls, while improved, are still kind of awful in some respects. Are there quick-time events? Oh my yes, and plenty of them. Are there lots of set-pieces? You bet.
As an action game, so far, it’s pretty good. It’s not innovative, but it’s not bad. It’s fun, for what it is, which is a very basic, very linear third-person shooter. To give you an idea of how linear, Leon treats flimsy chairs and brick walls exactly the same way. There is only one way to go in each area and by God, you will go that way.
And there’s so much of it. Each part of the campaign is enormous, 70 to 80% of the length of Resident Evil 5, and there are three of them before you finish and unlock a fourth.
I will say that of the reviews I’ve read, most of the harsh ones are ridiculously unfair and most of the praise-filled ones are absurdly generous, so far. This is not a game that merits 4/10 or two and a half stars, but what Famitsu saw in this baffles me, as well. I’ve played games that are far less fun and far more buggy that got better scores. It may not be terribly original or well-written, so far, but really I can throw that criticism at Mass Effect, Call of Duty, or most other massive franchises. I fail to see why I shouldn’t fault Western developers for pretty much exactly the same sins.
I have little doubt Resident Evil 6 will move a lot of games. If nothing else, Capcom makes sure you get a lot of game for your $60. But I’m not sure the hype over this one is anything other than overblown nerd rage.

Sounds about right. But having RE be a linear action game like its a Mordern Warfare campaign is disappointing and only serves to further cement RE2 as my all time favorite of the series.
And also, the RE6 banner add that’s up top is the most annoying fucking thing ever. The damn thing keeps expanding and playing weather I scroll over it or not and it already crashed firefox twice.
Wouldn’t a 4/10 and a 2.5 stars be a completely average game? Which it sounds like this is?
Or are we using video game review scores where 7s are the worst fucking thing to ever be released?
There are very few places I know for sure that don’t use 7 to describe worst game ever of all time. I agree though a 4/10 and 2.5 should be considered average if we go by numbers on a scale with 1 being terrible and 10 being GOTY.
Most sites have a review structure best described as “broken”. Even the good ones, unfortunately.
As far as the writing goes, if RE6 is basically along the same lines as 4 and 5, then I don’t really see the comparison to Mass Effect. Resident Evil has some of the worst writing ever, including a 4 page document entitled “Our Plan,” left on a table by zombie overlords. Mass Effect, on the other hand, is pulpy but really engaging. It’s nowhere near RE levels.
I played the RE6 demo and couldn’t find much to like. Are you having any issues with how big your character is on the screen? For some reason, it was bothering me. And in Leon’s section, it seemed like they were trying to make it more survival horror-ish, but I didn’t get any good sense of atmosphere. Thoughts?
If a game give me 30+ hours of gameplay and I’m entertained, it’s done it’s job. I probably will wait a couple of months to see if the price will go down, but I will probably get this around Christmas.
big fan of the game itself, only completed chapter 1 of the chris campaign. but ive put in about 6-7 hours on mercenaries. really digging the combat, gameplay mechanics. the ducking/roll/slide combo makes for some really cool moments. granted i did have to slow the camera down a bit to get more comfortable with it.
i consider this to be the most logical evolution of the series from 4. im really not seeing the issues that the critics see.
I think a lot of reviewers also take into account how far along in the series they are and how well its done as well; if a game is ‘okay’ on its own merits, but one of the worst in the series, then it’ll get a lower score – Or at least, that’s sorta what I’m guessing as a mind-set for some reviewers.
