So yup, there’s definitely no stopping it now — the Evil Dead remake now has a trailer and everything, and well, this definitely isn’t going to be a sanitized PG-13 trip into the woods. The first trailer is oozing with gore and icky imagery. Unfortunately it also seems to completely lack the quirky style and sense of humor that made Sam Raimi’s original movies memorable. Even during bits that pay homage to the original movies (like the shot of the blonde girl chainsawing her own arm off) there’s just no fun to any of it.
It is amusing that they needed five actors to replace one Bruce Campbell, with all of Ash’s signature moments being spread evenly amongst the cast. Also, man, is this movie squandering Jane Levy (aka younger, cuter Emma Stone) or what? I could barely pick her out of the trailer. Why would they dye her hair black?
Okay, okay, I’ll stop bitching for a moment so you can watch the trailer. Be forewarned, there’s no boobs or anything, but it’s gross enough that you probably don’t want to watch it at work…
Hmmm, why it’s almost as if Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell decided to make a competent (but not particularly memorable) horror flick that would bring in a few bucks based on the Evil Dead name, but intentionally left the style and humor out so the movie wouldn’t eclipse the originals in any way. Sam Raimi — great director, incredibly hacky producer. Well, except for Xena obviously.

And I already said this on Filmdrunk, but now with Cabin in the Woods coming out and having a lot of fun with horror, this seems even more stick up its own ass-ish
Hmmm, maybe they find an elevator in the basement that takes them to a better Evil Dead remake.
I’ve seen the trailer, several times, so I think as a fanboy I have to obligation to bitch now.

Yeeaah, I’m gonna give this a miss. Finally watched Cabin In The Woods the other day and it blew my mind, this…is just totally unnecessary. If Cabin In The Woods was a reaction to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, this film is the antithesis of that.

Stop saying an Evil Dead remake needs to have humor or “personality” (that word doesn’t mean what you think it means. There are lots of different types of personalities). Evil Dead did not have any intentional humor. It was intended to be an all out gore/shock horror film on a low budget. Sure, it had a few light hearted moments in there to work your emotions, but all of the “humor and personality” people keep saying is missing from this trailer came in Evil Dead 2. Personally I’m looking forward to a no holds barred gore fest in a theater. It hasn’t happened in too long. At least not well.
There was still a slapsticky undercurrent to the first Evil Dead, even if it wasn’t as pronounced as the sequels. It was supposed to be a fun, scary time. This remake, like so many modern horror movies, looks like an oppressive endurance test.
Does anybody have any idea who made the soundtrack for the trailer?
