So uh, spoilers ahead. What was up with Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s subplot in The Dark Knight Rises? He just sort of hung around, chatted with Batman, rode a school bus, then whoa wait, we discover his name is Robin and there he is hanging out in the Batcave? What was the point of it all?
Hit the jump for a tasty stew of rumors, speculation and cryptic quotes…
Well, maybe the point was for JGL to play Batman in all the planned crossovers and cameos serious ac-tor Christian Bale wouldn’t be up for. Rumors are swirling that JGL will “absolutely” be appearing as Batman in Warner Bros’ planned Justice League movie and probably be doing a cameo in Man of Steel as well.
Now, Joseph’s reps have refuted the rumor, but they haven’t released any sort of actual statement or direct quote from Joseph. That’s some preeetty weak refuting. “He’s actually in the movies but we can’t legally say yet” kind of refuting.
Regardless, there’s definitely going to be some crossover between Man of Steel and Justice League. When asked if Man of Steel was going to set up Justice League, Zack Snyder said…
“Um, how can I answer that? I can’t really say anything to that, because that’s a big spoiler.”
In other words, “yes”. So if JGL is going to be Batman in Justice League, there’s a very good chance he’ll be somewhere in Man of Steel as well. What do you folks think? Joseph Gordon-Levitt Batman — cheers or jeers? Hey, at the very least this may finally be the thing that gets your girlfriend into Batman.

If Green Lantern is any indication how shitty we can expect the DC world experience to be… Marvel was careful and did it pretty darn well. Is DC’s approach going to be just to copy that template? Because I want to call attention to my first sentence, Green Lantern was SHIT.
Green Lanter was SHIT, just to be clear.
I dont think Green Lantern is the only way to judge how good the JL would be. Man of Steel looks good, still means very little about a JL movie. Plus we know Nolan is producing MOS and JL so its safe to assume if you liked the previous Batman series, you will like this. Chris Nolan had nothing to do with Green Lantern neither did Jonathan Nolan.
I liked The Usual Suspects. Then I saw Superman Returns. I wouldn’t have expected such a lackluster film from Bryan Singer, but there you go. Man of Steel looks good, of course both you and I have only watched teaser trailers, so what have we even seen? Nothing.
GL was decent for the premise it had to cover….and come on Superman Returns stopped a bullet with his eyeball….nuff said
This is a big “maybe” for me. I mean, are they keeping the continuity from “Rises” going, or is Levitt just going to be “Bruce Wayne” in a sort of reboot going forward?
I dunno, I imagine they’ll keep the continuity? Otherwise there really was no point to JGL in Dark Knight Rises.
They’ll definitely continue it. That way Nolan had his trilogy but also made Warners happy by putting a plot in that could continue into the JL movie. If they weren’t setting up the JL movie, they could have done TDKR without Robin what so ever.
If this is what they’re doing, then so be it. I personally feel they should have a completely new set of actors and universe for Batman. Make it less realistic and dark and more comic booky. But, whatever. I’ll be paying to see them all either way.
All for it. Even though he probably won’t be Bruce Wayne, all is forgiven when you cast JGL.
I want Val Kilmer to eat the Justice League
“JUSTICE…..is served”

It would be weird.
However, it does make possible a situation where if drama calls for it, you can kill Batman.
So if JGL shows up in Man of Steel that will by default mean that Superman sat back and let a mad man hold Gotham hostage. And allowed Batman to be killed.
Also no. Rises is one of the worst Batman films I have seen. A good movie but a bad Batman film. It ruined all the good mythos.
I wouldn’t say is “one of the worst” but it is my least favourite of the nolan trilogy, I blame Ledger, he made TDK one of the best films ever and without him Nolan had nothing for a secuel, he had to make an entire new movie with a shit ton of new characters and very little time to develop them.
Well…that’s a problem with the DC universe in general. Superman should be able to clean up *all* the world’s problems by himself. Maybe let Wonder Woman handle some stuff when he’s having a sick day. It’s just something you have to overlook.
I believe Man of Steel will be an origin deal, so it will probably be set some time after TDK, meaning he wouldn’t have been Superman when Bane’s takeover went down. Or maybe he just wasn’t reading the newspapers on that crab boat in Alaska.
I loved TDK, I thought it was a great ending to the series. I think I get what you mean about the mythos (what with all the origin mixing, missing characters, and Batman’s ridiculously early retirement), but I don’t see Nolan’s Batman (or the films) as attempting to be definitive- It’s just a really great Elsworlds tale. But let’s get real- “Robin” didn’t receive ANY of Batman’s crazy assassin/kung fu/bullet dodging training, so he’s going to last two weeks in the suit, tops. No way he should he be in Man of Steel.
Well for starters, if this is all in the same continuity then Superman wasn’t around during Bane’s occupation of Gotham, he was probably still up in Alaska filming “Deadliest Catch” or whatever the trailer indicates. Second, read “No Man’s Land.” there’s a point somewhere near the middle where there’s an entire issue it pretty much dedicated to explaining why Superman leaves Gotham alone for Batman to deal with. Sure, he can swoop in and stop certain crimes from happening, but that’s not actually saving Gotham, that’s just stopping a crime.
i agree with shawn…
You know I am glad that Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown has been reconned out of the DCU. The less they are from the mess that is DC Comics, my memories of them remain untarnished.
I will only support this if JGL wears the same make up he did in Looper. And gets a blunderbuss on his belt.
I was thinking the same thing.
Kill this project, already.
We need a big “get” to play Robin. Is Christian Bale available for that? I think he’d be up for taking Robin in a new direction… A sexually confused mime whose invisible box may or may not include a glory hole. Check your name at the door, for in this invisible box… no names mean no regrets.
JGL is great and all, but he is the least imposing actor i can think of to play Batman. he’s like 5 foot 8 and 130 pounds. whose ass is he kicking?
Micheal Keaton is about the same size….and was the best Batman imo…aside from West

This was shot down the moment it popped up.
I’m one of the few people that actually liked Superman Returns, but my biggest complaint I think is the reason most people seem to absolutely hate it: Superman never punches anyone. By that, I mean he doesn’t have a really good villain to actually fight, it’s the same “Kyptonite” story that we’ve seen a million times before and it’s pretty stale.
That’ll change with Snyder, he’s proven he can handle Superhero fights pretty well. Now as for JGL, eh, I’m open to the idea but I can’t imagine that the WB Executives at the studio are happy with the idea of doing a movie where the most recognizable hero isn’t his most recognizable secret identity.
I’m with you on Superman Returns, I also enjoyed it.
I think the problem with Superman Returns is that it tried to tie itself to the Donner movies and recreate some of the goofy screwball comedy vibe of that movie, but since it was also a modern big-budget post-Batman Begins superhero movie, it had to have all these serious elements. So, you ended up with this movie that whiplashed back and forth between earnest drama with Superman’s kid, and wacky Lex Luthor comedy.
I also enjoyed Superman Returns quite a bit, and I really liked the homage it paid to the Donner movies. And Kevin Spacey is a talented enough actor to have Lex Luthor be both comical and menacing.
I think most people were disappointed for the reason Evil Twin said – there was no big bad for Superman to physically square off against. But without Kryptonite involved, you have to start bringing in some pretty fantastical villains from other worlds if you want someone who can square off with Supes. They probably didn’t want to get so otherworldly in a reboot movie, especially since it was the start of the “dark and gritty!” shtick for superhero/action movies.
Consider the realistic tone of the first Iron Man – and then the alien invasion in The Avengers. Probably wouldn’t have worked to have an alien invasion in the very first Marvel movie (or at least it would have made studio execs nervous). You gotta ease your way into the most fantastical elements.
If Superman Returns had been a bigger success, I would guess a different, more powerful villain (like Zod) would have been in the sequel.
Seriously ppl….Bale will take the money to still be Batman…quit talking crazy….How can JGL be Batman without ever being Robin….. How can you have any pudding if you don’t eat your MEAT?
(that wasnt a gay joke toward JGL…)
Your girlfriend wasn’t into Val Kilmer’s big lipped Batman?
I’ll ask her at the soonest available opportunity.
my girlfriend went to a fancy art school for illustration and despite my trying through dave mckean’s, sam keith’s, and chip kidd’s work to get her into batman the only part she enjoys is harley quinn’s quasi-s&m relationship with the joker in TAS. i have a weird girlfriend.
