Ain’t nothing but an ohm resistor.
Yesterday we reported Jamie Foxx was in talks to play the villain Electro in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Now we have an update, as both Jamie Foxx and Marc Webb have been dropping hints like Green Goblin drops Spidey-girlfriends. Foxx tweeted that he dressed up as Electro for Halloween:

The official Facebook account for The Amazing Spider-Man also shared the photo. So does this mean Foxx is signed to play Electro (AKA Maxwell Dillon), the lineman who was struck by lightning and left with the ability to manipulate electricity? (When we get electrocuted, we’re only left with the ability need to change our pants.) Director Marc Web just dropped another huge hint in an interview:
“I think Jamie Foxx … I think he’s electrifying. [...] I can’t go into it in too much detail, except to say that I think Jamie Foxx is one of our great living actors. He’s a star, but he’s a brilliant character actor. I mean, all of the way back to the days of “In Living Color,” I think he’s done some pretty exceptional work.”
All the way back to the days of In Living Color, you say?

NEVER FORGET.

I can hear DC right now, “Dammit! They took our Black electric guy! That’s our thing!”
By DC’s logic, Jamie Foxx would be called “Black Electro”.
Still not liking this. There’s a list of other villains I’d prefer over Electro, and I don’t want to see MJ or Harry Osborn in this rebooted franchise. The Jamie Foxx casting I don’t mind, but I’d prefer him as someone else. Maybe as Scorpion? or Shocker?
The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Electric Boogaloo
Scorpion would be interesting, although they theoretically already handled him in the tie-in game.
Personally, I want to see Foxx as Cardiac. Because why not, really.
I’ve always wondered why there are so many people that think a character would be ruled out just because of his/her appearance in a tie-in game.
-Vulture and Black Cat were set to feature in Raimi’s unproduced Spider-Man 4, despite having previously appeared in the tie-ins for the first and second films respectively
-Juggernaut was a boss in X2: Wolverine’s Revenge, yet appeared in X-Men: The Last Stand
-Silver Samurai was in X-Men: The Official Game, yet is set to appear as the main villain in The Wolverine
-AIM appeared in the tie-ins for both Iron Man films, yet is set to feature in Iron Man 3.
-Whiplash (Marc Scarlotti) was also featured in the tie-in for Iron Man, but his character was adapted as Ivan Vanko in Iron Man 2
-Firepower (Jack Taggert) was featured in the tie-in for Iron Man 2, yet is set to appear in Iron Man 3 (played by Ashley Hamilton)
-Madame Hydra was featured in Captain America: Super Soldier, yet is set to appear in The Wolverine, albeit as Viper.
-Blackout was in the tie-in for Ghost Rider, but was featured in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.
They’re cheaply-made tie-in games. They get some really bad reviews and are forgotten within months. I doubt the producers of the next Spider-Man film would rule out Scorpion or any other villain solely based on the fact that he was featured in the game.
Personally, I’d like to see Hobgoblin, particularly the version of the character from the 90s cartton. But I don’t see Jamie Foxx doing well in that role.
You should provide a few more samples if you really want to solidify your point,
Well, I’ve actually made the argument before so I already had the list handy.
Cardiac would be interesting and I could see him even being set up for a spin off that way (which is something I always wondered why Marvel never did). Another good one is The Prowler. Both have the benefit of actually being good guys, just a bit angry. And I liked the Prowler redesign in the Ultimate comics recently.
Let’s just consign Rocket Racer to the 20th century tho.
I don’t get it. I don’t really care who plays Electro, what I care about is that they’re using Electro. Admittedly, I don’t know too much of the character, but from what I’ve read he’s pretty terrible. The only interesting thing about him, to me, is his role in releasing the villains from the raft, but even then he was just a pawn. Unless they’re building up some Raft movie adaptation, or even a Secret Invasion down the line, there are dozens of more interesting villains than Electro.
In the (really ugly) MTV Spider-Man series, Max Dillon went to the same college as Peter Parker. In Spectacular Spider-Man, Dillon was a technician that worked at Conners’ lab and Spider-Man’s involvement caused the accident. Both of those had the bonus of Dillon’s powers being almost impossible to contain and Spectacular at least had him in a bulky containment suit where when he powers up, the energy signature resembles the pic up top. To him, his condition was Spider-Man’s fault. That’s the most they’ve ever done to tie him into Spider-Man’s life.
In Ultimate Spider-Man, he’s just a thug working for the Kingpin and already has his powers. However he got them scarred his face in a sort of spark looking pattern, but he doesn’t seem to care. He just hates Spider-Man for the same reason anyone hates Spider-Man.
There’s really nothing to him in any case. No great tragedy, no personal connection to Peter Parker, he’s just a dick with sparky powers. If he’s even in this movie, they’d have to warp his origin considerably.
