Prometheus is not supposed to be an Alien prequel, according to Sir Ridley Scott, despite the presence of:
- The Weyland corporation.
- The ship we see in the first Alien, right down to the Space Jockey.
- The eggs that look just like Facehugger condos except metallic.
- And just about everything else we see in the movie.
All of this adds up to pretty damning evidence on the screen that Sir Scott was lying through his teeth. But believe it or not, the original script by Jon Spaihts is online, and it was actually far, far less of an Alien prequel, despite having Alien in its actual title.
The script, called Alien: Engineers, actually would have made a great movie and it kind of hurts to see what might have been.
What kills are the missed opportunities. It’s never been fully discussed by the movies, but it’s been hinted, heavily, that the Xenomorphs are a weaponized species, and this script has more of those, seven in fact. There are acid-spitting centipedes, there are octopi-esque Facehuggers, and there’s a much, much bleaker ending that I’m surprised wasn’t kept.
Surprisingly, the infamous “C-section” scene is in this draft: If anything, actually, Scott made it even more of a body-horror gut punch, and believe me, on the page, it’s stomach churning. There’s quite a lot of Spaihts’ work in the movie, in fact, right down to snatches of dialogue.
Overall, though, it’s more Aliens than Alien, a hard-edged bug hunt of an action movie with perhaps less on its mind that Sir Ridley Scott wanted. The philosophical aspect of the finished film is practically non-existent here, and that undeniably gave it a flavor this draft lacks.
That said… Maybe we can see those acid-spitting centipedes in the next movie?

I’m nerdishly excited to read this draft when I can, but if it does get rid of the philisophical aspect, that’s a shame. It’s what made the movie unique and brought up ideas you can still discuss.
Although if what I’ve heard is true, all the bumbling scientist shit is all on Lindelof, which is a shame. Unless his thought process was, “well the only people who would leave their friends and familes for [?] years to sign up for a high risk secret mission they are told NOTHING about would probably not be tops in their field (or else they’d have a job on Earth) and would probably be a bit unstable. If he said that flat out, I’d say “ah shit good point. I’m an idiot”
Or I should say it didn’t YET have the philisophical aspect
You throw enough money at somebody, they’ll do anything.
Certainly. But if you were a top scientist in your field and were given a million dollars to leave your family for this potentially dangerous mission in space you aren’t given details to, you’d probably think it wasn’t worth the risk even for that kind of money. In the world of Prometheus I’d buy the fact that they had many of the top scientists pass on their generous offer, only to have to turn to second-rate loners and screw-ups.
Having said that…. guy thinking an alien cobra wants to play? What the hell is that shit? I’d be freaking out if a puppy appeared out of nowhere. I wouldn’t even go near a Barbie doll found in that creepy bunker.
I like the original draft more than the finished product, true it lost some of the spiritual aspects, but it made a lot more sense in a lot of areas too.
I always thought scripts were supposed to get better with every rewrite… This script is MUCH better than the finished product, unless there’s some director’s cut that adds in Vasquez.
I like the script but I do think there were some changes the movie made for the better. I honestly don’t think anything could have made Prometheus a classic; it’s serving too many masters. But I would have loved to see this movie.
HOLY CRAP — I’ve done nothing this morning but read this & send to friends with all caps messages about WHY DIDNT THEY MAKE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!! Its sort of like the script for AvP that followed the comic, in that its balls out action rocking kick ass awesomeness.. and then reality takes over and its not. Oh well. Tonight I dream of Magellan!!!!!!!!
My guess is that it wasn’t the movie Ridley Scott wanted to make. Screenwriters are not respected in Hollywood, alas.
Link is down, does anyone have an alternative, por favor?

UUggg, I want to read it… but not like that.
