
Those messed up creatures above are some of the new antagonists you’ll be fighting in Dragon’s Dogma‘s first major expansion, Dark Arisen. It’ll be coming next year, and we can’t wait.
For those unfamiliar, Dragon’s Dogma is an action RPG from Capcom with repetitive dialogue (“‘TIS WEAK TO FIRE!”), huge amounts of backtracking, and a kind of goofy and ridiculous ending. None of this matters because it’s also a game where you can be thrown at a dragon and hack at its underbelly while your party members freeze its wings and stab it in the face. Imagine Skyrim’s design with Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition rules. It’s that kind of game.
It was also a completely unexpected hit for Capcom. It was intended to compete with Skyrim in the West: That failed miserably. But it was a huge hit in Japan, where it was basically seen as another Monster Hunter game, which means DLC and sequels.
What we don’t know yet is exactly what happens, since all we really have about the game is a title and a few screenshots. Well, aside from the fact that you’re getting chased by Death himself:


The game has also debuted two new modes, for the five of us that already own it: A “Speedrun” mode and a “Hard” mode. Considering this is a game where random encounters can be massive boss fights and that enjoys killing you at the drop of a hat, both are kind of ridiculous.
And that’s just the way we like it.




I dumped sooo many hours into this game and loved it up until the end, also had issues with wandering into the wrong places and cancelling all my sidequests. I can’t wait for this to drop. Im def picking it up,
Me either. I’m still a little surprised at how the game sold over here. It got great reviews, and it was fairly hardcore. Ah well. At least it sold well enough for a sequel!
It was an open world action game sporting new features so IMO it wasn’t surprising that it sold well. It wasn’t really that hardcore either. Unless you haven’t played Dark Souls then maybe Dragon’s Dogma is hardcore for you but asides from the first few hours and post-dragon you won’t die often.
I don’t think DD was meant to compete with Skyrim either because it had allegedly been in production 2 years before Skyrim was even announced. Still the crown for RPG’s goes to Dark Souls for me. Dragon’s Dogma did so much right but some of the design decisions were questionable. I loved the combat, boss fights, exploration and non-board quests but the story isn’t anything to write home back and the saving system is just horrible. Who thought it would be a good idea to only allow one save in a game with such a deep character creator?
If they get a good writer for the sequel and add in multiple saves then the sequel would be even more amazing. I hope this expansion at least has a story that keeps you intrigued throughout (the main quest only became interesting towards the end and the ending literally left me lost for words and not because it was amazing…)
Right there with you Danks. The “climb on em and stab em somewhere vital” mechanics intrigued me in the demo enough to pick this up and now it’s right up there with Dead Souls on any best action rpg list. Not a perfect game but a damn fun one with great combat.
I love how you can constantly change vocations, and how a few skills and perks from each vocation can be used in another. Really wish more people played this game.
That overlap was genius. It made me try pretty much all of the vocations because hey, I was already leveled up in some of them!
