When it comes to superheroics, really only the top tier get games, and most of them not even then. Wonder Woman has never had a solo game, for example, while Batman has had dozens, and Superman’s have all been varying degrees of weak. But we’ve advanced to a point where superheroes can have quality video games.
And we’ve got a few suggestions.
The Flash
Imagine a cross between a racing game and Mirror’s Edge. The physics would probably be a nightmare, but the Flash, being able to run up buildings and across water, seems ideal for the huge, open-world racing games we’ve seen recently. Add a touch of combat, his Rogues, and maybe the Time Treadmill and you’ve got all the ingredients of a fun game.
Thunderbolts
This goes especially the new Marvel NOW! team, but the series in general lends itself well to multiplayer co-op. You could have a game that’s a mix of Ghost Recon and Bulletstorm; shooting for those who want it, brawling for those who don’t, sneaking for those who want it, massive property destruction for those who don’t.
Deadshot
So he’s not a hero: Name me another character, aside from the Punisher, better suited to a third-person shooter or sniping sim. Deadshot makes a great non-hero for DC, it’s time he got the spotlight.
Nextwave
Just let Warren Ellis write the script, his way, and give us the final hallway fight. Everything else will be gravy. Although it does lend itself to a Borderlands-esque type game.
Concrete
To be fair, it’s obvious why Concrete has never had a game. You can’t fake Paul Chadwick’s gloriously detailed and painstaking artwork, just like capturing the gentle, generous spirit of the books would be difficult for many developers to do. But a real-time adventure/puzzle game would be perfect: Concrete is a story of a man trying to use his abilities for good, and adventure games lend themselves to storytelling.

I know they’ve had a ton of games, but I think an Action-RPG X-Men title would be perfect on WiiU. 5 player co-op with the original 5 X-Men. The person with the Tablet is Jean Grey who can use her psychic powers to affect the enemy AI and move objects on the screen around while Cyclops, Angel, Beast and Iceman do typical brawling beat-em-up stuff with the regular controllers. Maybe throw in an All New X-Men angle and have their older selves, Wolverine and Storm show up as unlockable characters.
And I know most folk hate waggle controls, but Wonder Woman’s lasso would be pretty cool with the Wiimote.
Sounds a bit like Natural Selection II, actually. Pretty fun game, if you haven’t tried it.
I seem to remember a Flash game was in development at one point. It looked pretty cool.
But can we get a decent Superman game first? Superman 64 was obviously the crappiest game ever, and Superman Returns was… broken to say the least.
There she is: [www.youtube.com]
Yeah I remember that footage of the Flash, running around all sonic-boomy(wait, huh?) and dragging stuff behind him as he ran. Seemed pretty awesome.
Good find, America. The rail grinding on that is weird, but it seems like combat was fairly unique. Quite a shame the game was shut down.
Came to mention that. I see you got it covered, so I’ll just say “Time Treadmill?” COSMIC Treadmill.
I think there should be a Iron Fist/Luke Cage game. It could be a side scrolling beat em up or anything else. But really they should make a 70s style buddy cop movie/CW TV show about them.
It has been in the works for, quite literally, decades. John Singleton was supposed to tackle it at some point.
John Singleton should not be directing anything, ever.
I’d buy a nextwave game even if it was awful, as long as Ellis writes it as you describe.
Wouldn’t a The Flash game basically be Sonic the Hedgehog except with maybe a more open world? Sonic didn’t exactly have a good transition to 3D.
True, but that was as much Sega’s fault as the character’s. And Sonic did have a few good 3D games, once they got the hang of it.
I’d like to know why we haven’t seen a Flash movie by now. I really think Ryan Reynolds would have fit that character much better than Green Lantern.
Completely agree. He’d be a great Barry Allen. Green Lantern would have been better served with someone a little older and more serious for the role.
i say they just replace sonic the hedgehog with the flash in all further sequels, also mirror master could replace eggman.
A Wonder Woman game could be potentially FUCKING AWESOME if you think about it. Levels on Themyscira and the Underworld could be God of War-like. Then it’s off to WWII to fight magical Nazis. Then it’s off to Apokolips to fight the Female Furies and Darkseid. Then repelling supervillains and aliens around the modern world. Finally, some form of the Crisis with cameos galore.
All the while wielding some combination of magic bracelets, magic lasso, invisible plane, sword, and shield. Unlike Supes and Bats, WW can step over the line and lop off an arm or a head when the situation calls for it.
We’ll never get a WW game worth a shit though, write that down.
Dead pool.
No. Wait. Hear me out.
Cell shaded. I know it can suck. But XIII looked awesome. And Borderlands pulls it off.
Incorporate the breaking the 4th wall, because of course you’d have to. Along with the multi bubble schizophrenia. Those two details would be hard because it’d be super easy to make it funny for about twenty minutes and then get lazy and have it be repetitive. But done right that schtick could be awesome.
As far as story I think one of two ways would be cool. in both cases have him chasing the cure for his healing factor so he can finally die. You wouldn’t have to build in a lame game mechanic for respawning because he’s already a built-in game mechanic for respawning. Anyway, you find it and then I think it could go one of two ways. As in the book, he could suddenly decide he doesn’t want to die anymore, and in typical Deadpool comics subversion style you could subvert the game by putting him in end of the game level difficulty with no chance of survival and no respawn. So it’s nearly impossible to beat the game completely.
Or him getting the cure could be the end of the game itself. He gets it and goes outside and the million bad guys you’ve just screwed over are waiting there and they take turns killing you and then extra killing you.
You could play as his incarnation as a good guy or as a bad guy. Other Marvel characters could show up. His redemption quest could be baked in with no heroes trusting him. You could completely destroy the money paradigm. He’s made millions of dollars yet never has any money because he either blows it, literally loses it or gets screwed out of it.
I’m telling you. This could work.
Funny you should bring that up… a Deadpool game is on the way.
Whoa! If they use any of those elements I totally call royalties.
That’s how that works, right? I’m not a lawyer but I’m fairly certain they’ll need to give me half of their monies.
Loved that he’s voiced by Nolan North. Still not sure about the game itself, but first thing I thought when I saw it was “serious Earthworm Jim”
Cable or Bucky Barnes/ Winter Solider could be good 3rd person shooters.Especially after Captain America 2, he will be more well known, and he doesn’t have an aversion to killing. Maybe even a SHIELD or Nick Fury game, with the T.V show next year it would work well together. Even Green Arrow or Arsenal wood be good. They shoot fast enuff its like having a gun. Also now with Arrow and the last few seasons of Smallville, he is more well known now then ever before. And with the trick arrows etc, it could be very similar to batman games. I think Daredevil could make a good action game too. Maybe even a FF game, choose diff character for each level, or co op. Basically you could make a great game for most comics, the character just has to be well known for it to take.
