Remember when George Lucas announced that, as part of his ongoing crusade to stomp your childhood flat, he was going to monkey with the Original Trilogy, again, by making it 3D, after he made the prequels 3D for no good reason?
Yeah, apparently the House of Mouse has decided that was a terrible idea.
Courtesy of Deadline:
I learned of this decision just now from Lucasfilm‘s promotional partners who are telling me the studio now owned by Disney wants to focus only on “rebooting the franchise” with three new Star Wars films. This surprising decision follows the underwhelming box office performance of Episode I: The Phantom Menace re-released in 3D in February 2012.
This decision isn’t that surprising, actually: The Phantom Menace, when rereleased, only grossed about $100 million worldwide, which is roughly a tenth of what the movie brought in when it first came out, and fans actually still eagerly looked forward to a Star Wars movie.
Apparently, fans voting with their wallets did at least help influence the decision, so we are thankfully free of any 3D Star Wars movies.
Now, Disney. Since we’re on the topic of money… and fan desire… how about an original cut of the Original Trilogy? Or, if you can’t be bothered, mayhap farm it out to the Criterion Collection? We’re sure they could find the time to dig up an original print and restore it, call us crazy.

This…is a step in the right direction? I don’t know whether to feel happy or be worried that Disney is toying with my emotions.
Get used to it.
The original trilogy has been remastered and re-released on Blu-ray, still the one done by Adywan destroys all other copies!

I’m not a huge SW fan, but I also would like the original trilogy put out on blu-ray. I recently watched Harmy’s “Star Wars Despecialized edition” remastered 2.0 and LOVED it. Except for a bit of the unfortunate “blue-orange” contrast in certain scenes, it was almost perfect. Though I believe he’s fixing that problem for a 2.1 release.
Is that the “Han shot first.” childhood of which you speak? You already too late to the party.
I’d like something that isn’t a rip from a laserdisc. That’s literally all those releases are.
@Dan, the aforementioned “Revisited” edit is good, but I prefer the “Despecialized” edition that was released by Harmy. Check it out.
Call it Star Wars “Classic.” I’m okay with them trying to make the special effects looking better, but they need to cut out all the extra crap that was added in 1997.
I had been kind of hoping that the 3D re-release of the OT would absolutely pummel the 3D re-release of the prequels at the box office, but perhaps this is better still.
Look for something called Harmy’s Despecialized edition of the original Star Wars trilogy. This guy made a blu-ray quality version of the movies. It’s worth seeking out and downloading.
Harmy’s got double love from this site today. I just watched his SW edit the other night and thought it was fantastic. Makes me wanna buy a brand new computer so I can burn it onto blu-ray. My brother actually sat and watched it with me, and he’s even less of a SW fan than I am, which says A LOT.
You can burn it onto a dual-layer DVD-R like I did. Look for them at Office Depot. It holds twice as much as a regular DVD-R, so you can burn blu-ray quality movies without a blu-ray burner.
