Scanning room…Sony and Nintendo products detected…initializing destruction sequence…
So, a few months back we showed you some Microsoft patents for a system that would project visuals on the walls around you, effectively turning an entire room into a game environment. Well, looks like those patents are actually going to come to fruition — yesterday a CES Microsoft announced IllumiRoom. That’s the name you’re going with Microsoft? Okay, sure.
Hit the jump for an IllumiRoom hype video…
Okay, first reaction — this isn’t holodeck quality! Lame!
Second reaction — well of course it isn’t. The holodeck isn’t a real thing. This still has the potential to make games more immersive.
Third reaction — This thing is going to give me a headache and make me want to barf, isn’t it?
Soooo yeah, I dunno. What do you folks think?

If it’s subtle, like the snow falling during halo and that other game, it would be fine. Otherwise, I feel the headache coming on.
Yeah, I feel like it could be useful for setting the right mood — for instance, how about a Silent Hill game that projects rusty crap on your walls and makes it feel like you’re actually playing the game in an oppressive dungeon? But I dunno, anything that’s too complex or you actually have to pay attention to probably won’t work.
So, I guess the question is, is fancy mood lighting something we really want with our games? I dunno.
no, i don´t like it, it seems to be mostly boring or context you don´t need.
It looks like a cool idea but I feel as if the projector would need to be stronger for it to be truly immersive.
It seems like it could be pretty distracting. But any tech that brings Evil Lincoln closer to reality im all for.
I think its a great first step that no one has wanted to chance taking. Remember that the cell phone screen on the Nokia cell phone at the turn of the century (most popular at the time) was roughly the size of a quarter, and you could play snake on it. Now look at what you have and what you can do with the Galaxy S3 or iPhone5.
The potential for this technology is exciting, the the future potential of full visual immersion of a 180 degrees. The thought of playing a game like Madden where your peripheral picks up a blitzing linebacker, or the campers sitting in a corner of COD, or Dodge Viper that pulls up next to you in Forza, is exciting.
In 5 to 10 years this could be truly amazing technology.
Ya this is the first step in a long process to full immersion virtual reality. But at this point it does just seem like its going to be very expensive, irritating mood lighting.
Like most other things it will come down to how its priced to see if it will take off.
I agree, the price of this going to be important, but history has shown that the price of technology decreases over time. Don’t get me wrong, the video is not terribly impressive, but neither was the first prototype of the automobile. The potential has the ability to do some amazing things.
Even beyond the realm of video games, I picture this could create an amazing sports experience. Take MLB, the standard camera view is behind the pitcher facing the batter, you see very little else. Now with this technology we see the pitcher/batter/catcher/ump on the TV, and the 1st and 2nd baseman projected on the wall to the left, 3rd and SS on the right, 3rd base coach sending in signals, benches watching the action, the on deck man stepping into the practice circle and managers going over cards of pitch counts or calling over to the bullpen. You would get to take in so much more of the game.
That looks like it would drive me up the frigging wall with irritation.
That video already gave me a headache
If used correctly, it could be great. Like a way of letting you know where you are being shot from in a FPS. I also like how the buildings were extended, so a game like Assasins creed, you have a better idea of what your env looks like without twirling the damn joystick all the time.
It has potential.
Thought it was weird that, while playing the fps and the whole room was projected from the video game, that you could still only see one arm and a gun. Kind of weird.
Much quicker way to create a “dreamatorium” than black paint & orange tape!
I’d get this as long as it’s priced well, the potential is what they want to show off and mission accomplished, the potential for the next few generations of this tech is obvious.
So it’s pretty much a way of getting a projector sized image on your wall/ceiling/floor but with neat little effects? I’m not sold.
