A few days ago we brought you the rumor that Zack Snyder was developing a Star Wars movie outside of the new Trilogy based on Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. Well, turns out it’s not happening. Aw, darn? From a Snyder spokesperson…
“While he is super-flattered because he is a huge fan, Zack is not involved in any way with the new Star Wars.”
Of course that doesn’t mean some sort of Star Wars spin-off isn’t being made by someone else. I’d say non-Trilogy movies are almost a certainty — Zack Snyder just won’t be involved. Oh well, no Seven Jedi in Super Slow-mo-Vision. Easy come, easy go.

Hopefully Man of Steel proves me wrong, but Snyder just isn’t that good of a director. He’s not terrible, but he probably shouldn’t try pulling a Leone here.
Slightly unrelated question: Why is Hollywood hell bent on dragging out everything as of late? I mean, I know the obvious answer (money), but I feel like every non-indie has to clock in at 2 and 1/2 hours and be part of a trilogy. Hobbit = way too long and no need for two more. With Django, my only real complaint was pacing (could’ve been streamlined). Dark Knight Rises: 2.5 hours.
My point is that I don’t see a need for another Star Wars trilogy. Why not just keep making standalone movies set in the universe? Maybe all these directors are avoiding the gig because they don’t want to commit 6+ years of their lives on a single franchise.
