What you see above is pretty much all Sony is telling us right now, but it’s pretty easy to do the math: The PS4 is incoming.
Just for the sake of completeness, here’s the trailer, which is pretty much just multicolored lightning and Sony’s button markings:
This is interesting because, if it really is the PS4, and it’s hard to see what Sony would be doing that it would create such hype otherwise, then the race is officially on. It’s no secret that the the next Xbox is in heavy development and that Microsoft intends to roll it out this year. The fact that Major Nelson posted a similarly vague E3 countdown clock indicates that Microsoft might just be facing its thunder stolen.
On the other hand, Sony would not be rolling this out at a special event if they intended to have it sitting around until 2014. Furthermore, Sony needs the video games unit to be profitable again, and to attempt to use as a springboard for yet another new format, 4K in this case. That February 20th is five days before Sony’s big retailer convention is also attention-getting. You don’t show 2014 products at an event designed to get retailers to sell your stuff this year.
In other words, whatever we see February 20th will likely be something we can buy this year. And we’ll be curious to see what it is.

I’m really excited. I saw what someone claimed was concept art on tumblr and it looked really cool.
I’ve no doubt it’ll be well-designed, but I’m curious about the games.
I started tapping my feet on the floor like an excited 5 year old when I heard this, very excited…
Also read this morning on Origins facebook page that Battlefield 4 will be a PS4 title, so I guess its pretty much official…
…oh, and that they’re also releasing Battlefield 4 demos this year
Iiiiiinteresting…
Well, Nintendo doing a weird little mini-E3 in January makes sense now.
Random prediction — The Last Guardian re-surfaces as a PS4 game.
Oh I would so love that to be true.
That actually makes a lot of sense. It’s either a launch title or it’s the PS3′s last hurrah.
It looked so good to begin with they could just do a minor polishing and sell it as “next gen”.
My loins would explode.
Maybe this is why they’ve been so tight-lipped about the fate of Final Fantasy XIII Versus, too.
WSJ pretty much confirmed that it is the PS4 reveal, and that it will launch in time for the holidays.
I;m not too concerned with the games or specs at this point- I’m sure both will be great- but I am pretty excited about the new features. Stuff like this – [kotaku.com]
and whatever else Sony has up their sleeve.
The fact that this and Durango are similar in architecture is… pretty interesting.
I didn’t necessarily mean I wasn’t interested in the specs, just more so that I’m not overly concerned with how each console will look (because I’m sure they will both look great). What really interests me is the new features that take the boxes far beyond what we already know. Who’s going to get closer to the whole ‘one box to rule them all’ mantra?
Kinect-like features, sharing, browsing, integration with other platforms, media, apps, etc.
That’s really where the battle will be won.
Hopefully they have games worth actually buying at launch unlike with the PS3. I’ll probably wait for a price drop anyway, though, since they launch at such ridiculous prices.
inFamous 3 is probably a launch title, there’s probably a new Killzone, Media Molecule is probably doing something, Sony’s got a lot of leeway here.
Ubisoft confirmed Watchdogs was current Gen right? I am psyched for this. I personally like Sony’s systems and their services and plan on getting the PS4 (eventually, I usually wait for the slim model and with all these good looking games coming for the PS3 still I wont feel that crushing need to)
Watch Dogs is indeed confirmed as current gen, but I’d imagine a next-gen port would be a simple business.
I’ve got enough unplayed games left that I can wait for the revision models before jumping in to the next gen. Damn I’m smart.
I’d partake in PS3 and 4 a lot more if PSN’s voice chat wasn’t something Alexander Graham Bell wouldn’t even consider acceptable.
Yeah, if you’re into multiplayer, it’s a problem. If you’re not it’s… actually really great.
