Bungie finally rolled out some information about what their next game, Destiny, is all about. Basically, they’re making it sound like what happens when you smash Halo, Skyrim, and World of Warcraft together.
Here’s the video, which gets into the overall plot and likely blows the plot twist at the end of the game:
Apparently that will take an in-game timeframe of ten years.
Destiny, headed to PS3 and Xbox 360, is a first-person shooter in terms of gameplay. But it has a lot of RPG elements to it, in the sense that you’re constantly upgrading your weapons and gear, and also in the sense that you can go it alone, or you can organically put together a party for raids. Honestly, that part sounds pretty cool:
Destiny’s multiplayer modes, both competitive and cooperative, are designed to be seamlessly merged with its single-player experience. Players will come together and adventure together naturally, Bungie promises, without visible matchmaking. They’ll pair up in the City’s Overwatch district, form bonds, visit distant worlds. At times, they’ll cross paths with strangers, their separate adventures overlapping to become one.
In other words, as you play through, you can voluntarily become a party NPC with better AI. Bungie also claims there will be “time-sensitive” and “emergent” activities, which is code for “We’re going to pull random stuff on you.”
It’s still a FPS, in terms of gameplay, and Bungie hasn’t bothered to roll out any gameplay footage yet beyond alpha of some people running around with guns not actually shooting anything. But it certainly sounds ambitious and, most importantly, expansive. Way too many games stop at around ten hours, but Bungie wants to have you playing it for 100 hours or more, and have it be fun even if you’re tired or only have an hour to screw around in the game.
Considering this is the first stirrings of the hype machine, we’re guessing this arrives later this year, and we’ll be curious to see it.

I’ve never been one for fps but this looks legit interesting
It does. I want to see gameplay, how matching works, and whether joining a quest is a full commitment or a casual thing. But in the broad strokes, I’m curious.
I was a bit disheartened when I first heard it was another FPS as the original concept art looked awesome, but I’m glad to see they’re going with the expansive, heavy lore MMO-style they originally hinted at.
Incidentally, with the use of “organic” and casual clan forming etc, it sounds like everything I’ve been hoping Elder Scrolls Online will be, but with added walking tanks, which sounds just fine by me.
I stole the clothes from every single NPC in Markarth. It’s a shame you can’t visit, it’s now the Naked City.
Orgy at the Silver-Blood Inn!
There are a million mods in the Naked City…
How is this being released on the 360 and ps3 by the end of this year if each company is supposedly bringing out their next gen consoles at the end of the year? And from my understanding, the next gens won’t support used games, wouldn’t this be considered used by the new consoles?
My guess is that it’ll be on the next-gen as well. The fact that the game requires a persistent Internet connection is pretty telling.
I really hope it does cross over to the next gen because it will definitely put that persistent internet connection to good use.
Like most upcoming games Destiny will probably have a current gen version and a next gen version with spiffed up visuals. They just haven’t announced the next gen versions because, well, Sony and Microsoft haven’t officially unveiled the machines yet.
If that’s the case, then i wonder if they’ll charge an upgrade fee or make you buy the same game over again to make it work on the next gen consoles.
I know they say itl’l be out for this curremt gen, but yeah this sounds like something they would try to use as a launch title for both Sony and Microsoft. If it comes even close to the hype it would be a VERT convincing argument to get a new system when it rolls out.
Regardless of the next-gen question, I’m pretty pumped for this. Bungie is taking their own extensive fps experience and expanding on it by taking some pages from Borderlands and the MMO arenas to make a very ambitious community based RPG/Shooter hybrid and I heartily approve. This is what happens when established developers are left alone to make good games.
Ironically this is exactly the kind of concept that would make EA’s panties all wet but their corporate culture would never allow something like this to be created.
Color me beige…you see…because I’m not impressed, yet not hating.
“Your Neutralness, we have a beige, alert.”
“If I don’t survive, tell my wife I said….hello.”
So buy the game, then pay 50 bucks a year for an online pass for the next 10 years? That’s what they’re getting at, right?
If that’s the case, who’d buy it? The game needs an always-in internet connection.
Bobby Kotic just saw the promotional material and is currently trying to hack Bungie’s server to get the master code.
Quite a trick, considering this is an Activision property.
That didnt stop him from doing exactly that to Infinity Ward…
The 10-year comment is in reference to the fact that their contract with Activision calls for them to only make this franchise over the next 10 years.
Also, it apparently is a timed 360 exclusive with the PS3 version coming out roughly a year after. Now, it is possible that it comes out for 360 and Durango at the same time and then PS3 and Orbis the year after. But there were leaked contract details stating it is coming out for Microsoft first then Sony after a timed exclusivity window.
My level of excitement for this game is stupid high.
