The Last Of Us looks impressive, but so far Sony and Naughty Dog haven’t been terribly forthcoming about what you’ll actually be fighting against in the game. The trailers have only shown main characters Joel and Ellie being threatened by regular, murderous humans, but we’ve always known the game will also contain some kind of “infected” monsters as well.
Well, the wraps have finally been lifted from the infected, and it seems like they come in two forms — runners, which look like fairly typical 28 Days Later-style fast zombies, and clickers, who have heads that look like gruesome, scabby fortune cookies.

Heh, part of this game takes place in Boston. That’s… highly entertaining. For non-residents, it looks like Joel and Ellie are shanking their way through State Street station, something many Boston commuters have dreamed about for years.
The Orange line to Forest Hills is filled with the undead on a regular basis.
As somebody who used to live near Sullivan Square… yeah. Yeah, it really is.
That is awesome. I want a level in Mission Hill, where the only pickable object is a thirty of Natty Ice.
Jesus, that’s State Street, for certain. And, my localized D&D game just got some new graphics…
Ohhh maaan the sound design on the clickers is reaaaaaallly gross. Its really effective in ratcheting up the dread.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Visually — fairly scary, but those damn noises would drive me crazy.
man, I can not wait for this game!
how do they not notice the light from the flashlight? Are they eyeless and the clicks are some sort of echolocation? COOOL
Yea, the fungus grows through their eye sockets so that’s how they see.
SWEEEEEEET
That’s well thought-out, then. Nice to see that touch.
Yeah the clickers use echolocation and work in unison for the most part. Apparently the runners are similar to 28 Days Later where they can still see and run and work in packs.
I would have preferred it be more like The Road where you only fight/flee other humans. The violence seems so much more brutal and troubling when it comes from a struggle against other human survivors.
It has that, too. The prior gameplay footage that’s been released has focused entirely on that side of things.
Yeah, I mean, as long as The Road stuff is in there too, I don’t mind some zombies/fortune cookie heads. I just hope The Road stuff doesn’t end up being a half-hour prologue to 20 hours of zombies.
That’s my concern. The first video they released was just so troubling and hinted at gameplay that involved having to make some tough choices and employ some morally questionable tactics against other people thrown in the same mix as you. If that gives way to just gleefully shivving and shotgunning zombies/mutants, I think it’ll take on a different identity than what I was interested in.
Will this ever be released on Xbox?
Nope.
Agree with StalloneWolf. Human conflict is so much more interesting and intense. Tacking on the whole zombie/infected monster macguffin is just a shoddy way to ratchet up the action. Thats one of the reasons It’s getting a bit old if you ask me.
That said, I’ll probably still buy the game. I’ve been excited for it thus far. Hopefully I won’t completely hate it.
This has increased my anticipation. My body is ready. I just read earlier that the “infection” the zombie like things has is based off of Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, the fungus that makes ants “zombies” whose only purpose is to spread the fungus and grows out of their heads.
I definitely loved the human-on-human stuff, but these guys are quite cool as well, and it looks like Naughty Dog’s doing a lot to distance these guys from your traditional zombocom tropes. I just hope that it’s somewhere close to a 50/50 split, in terms of human enemies vs. infected enemies. Or even like 70/30 with humans outnumbering infected. But from what I’ve heard about it today, it sounds like you’ll probably be dealing with more infected than humans. That’d be okay too, but… I guess I really just hope that it’s not, like, the first 20% of the game is humans and then the rest is all infected. I want it to go back and forth, at least to some degree.
