I wasn’t overly wowed by the Sony’s Playstation 4 reveal, but one very welcome bit of news did come out after the big press conference — contrary to rumors, the PS4 won’t require an always-online Internet connection, and it will, somehow, someway, allow used games.
In other news, Diablo III, a game that caused a lot of problems for itself by doggedly insisting players always be connected to the Internet, is coming to the PS4. But wait, how’s that whole “you have to be online” thing going to work on the PS4 if the PS4 doesn’t have to be online? Well, it’s not. In a recent interview a couple guys from Blizzard offhandedly confirmed Diablo III for consoles will feature offline local multiplayer.
So yeah, there you have it PC gamers — you now have a legitimate reason to feel slighted. Go nuts. Or, you know, bring a controller and join us at the console party.

Well, join you with the PS4 or WiiU. It’s still unknown about the next Xbox, isn’t it?
In the Gametrailers interview they were squirming when asked about a version for the next Xbox — I bet it’s happening.
Take that PC Master-race!
I’m just kidding, there are no winners in the DRM arms race.
No cross platform play and if you have a PC and PS4 version your characters are separate.
That’s kind of like saying you only got kicked in the balls with a sneaker instead of a steel-toed boot, though.
How ’bout that, a good decision!
One of my big PC friends tried to make the excuse that the reason it has to be connected to the internet at all times is because of the auction house.
I didn’t get the logic behind what he was saying, but then again I also wasn’t paying attention too much because I was too busy gleefully tasting his tears of PC fanboy anguish.
My understanding is that it was to combat piracy.
People are still playing diablo 3?
The thing is, if this is true, then the tactic worked. I’m actually up for trying out Diablo 3 when before I’d have never touched it.
Sort of off-topic but I don’t think they will ever top the simplistic beauty of Diablo 1. Diablo 3 seemed like it could’ve been an expansion for 2. It just didn’t really bring anything new to the table worth the shitload of time they spent working on it.
It really did not. Honestly, most of the isometric dungeon crawler genre seems mired in just imitating Diablo relentlessly, so it’s really sad Blizzard didn’t see any reason to try something new.
I much preferred Torchlight 2 to Diablo 3. The loot in Diablo was just so depressing but I heard they improved it in patches. My friend is gonna make me play it again for PS4 though, I just know it.
I think this will force Microsoft’s hand. No way they can go head to head with the PS4 at a similar price point if the Xbox Ver 3.0 requires a constant internet connection and won’t allow used games. I’ll make the switch to Sony gladly and I think a lot of other gamers would too.
Microsoft and Sony are trending in exactly opposite directions, though, in just about every respect. Sony is avoiding cutting deals with cable networks, Microsoft is cozying up to Comcast. Sony is sticking to a traditional control scheme in most respects, Microsoft wants to build a goddamn holodeck. So I’m not going to be surprised if they pull the trigger with anti-used games, always-on, and so on.
