The original trenchcoated magic user comes back to the DCU, Judge Dredd, and a pulp adventure top our comics we’re looking forward to this week.
Constantine #1
John Constantine gets his new ongoing this week, and it promises to be… interesting. DC choosing to wrap up Hellblazer after three hundred issues (twenty-five years in print, no less) and move Constantine officially back to the DCU was a bit controversial among fans, many of which weren’t happy to see him leave his more adult Vertigo digs for the slightly more mainstream DCU. Nonetheless, he’s been one of the most popular characters in Justice League Dark, and Robert Venditti has stayed on as the writer.
By all accounts, John will be up to his usual tricks, and we’ll be curious to see what the shift in venue brings. We’ll have a full review tomorrow.
Judge Dredd: Year One #1
True, one could argue Dredd is a little better as a character without an origin, but the talent behind this makes the book a compelling one. Namely, Matt Smith, former editor for 2000AD, is writing, with art by The Authority‘s Simon Coleby. Also, any Dredd is good Dredd: IDW has been doing the original series justice and then some with the work it’s been publishing. This too we’ll have a review of tomorrow.
Five Ghosts: The Haunting Of Fabian Gray #1
We admit it: We’re picking up this one based on the concept. Fabian Gray is an adventurer who touches a “dreamstone.” This gives him access to the skill set of five different ghosts.
OK, so it sounds more like the plot setup for a video game than a comic book, but it’s still a compelling setup, and we’re suckers for pulp thrills.
What are you most looking forward to this week? Check out the full list and let us know.

Captain Marvel, Saga, Mind MGMT, Indestructible Hulk, New Avengers, Avengers, Daredevil, BPRD
I used to just read Avengers to see what a couple of characters are up to outside their own books, but Hickman is killing it, and I CAN NOT WAIT to see the return of Star Brand.
Hickman’s doing a great job on that book, absolutely.
I’m reading “Transhuman” by Hickman right now – it starts off really cool, I’m loving it so far.
I agree, Five Ghosts looks great and based on the premise alone, I added it to my pull list when I saw it in Previews.
not a huge week for me otherwise, which is actually good bc last week was heavy.
Yeah, I also went on a massive Empowered kick last weekend, read all seven volumes in one shot. But this week looks to have a lot of interesting stuff.
nice, I love those weekend binges. what’s Empowered? never heard of it
It’s a manga by Adam Warren that grew out of commissioned “damsel in distress” sketches. Basically, Empowered is a superheroine who is a neurotic mess. She’s got a supersuit, but it’s flimsy and torn easily, meaning she gets captured and tied up a lot, and she basically gets made fun of constantly by villains and heroes alike.
She’s got a terrible job, zero self-esteem, and her superpowered coworkers are jerks who mistreat her. It starts a bit simplistic and goofy, but Warren gives some weight to it as the series goes on, and he actually explores a lot of serious questions superheroes actually existing would bring up.
I have already added it to my pull list too after seeing it in the back pages of Great Pacific. Looks awesome.
JLA, Justice league, nightwing, red hood outlaws, TMNT history of the foot, superior spidey, and savage wolverine. Yeesh im gonna be broke.
It’s a patriotic week… Wonder Woman, Captain America. Also all-New Xmen and Indy Hulk… and the opportunity to read the stuff I bought last week that I didn’t get around to.
Indestructible Hulk always makes me smile. Especially now that he’s fighting Attuma, I can make all those terrible “Junior” jokes.
Probably the Valiant books this week. Can’t wait for Harbinger #10 and X-O #11. Especially X-O and the start of Planet Death
And we’ll have reviews! Looking forward to Harbinger in particular. The overriding theme of loneliness and retreating into fantasy worlds really gives the book some resonance. The last issue of Harbinger got a lot of dust in my eye.
I’m taking home Saga, Constantine Nova and New Avengers for sure.
I’m trying to figure out where I go from there, I’ve gotta cut some books from my rotation, because I’m adding Nowhere Men and Constantine. Superior Spiderman and Indestructible Hulk are on the cut list this week. Trying to keep it little light this week, as next week is going to brutalize me.
Do yourself a favor, absolutely keep Nowhere Men and Hulk!, but dont waste your time with that dribble that is “Constantine”
Constantine suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked. Hellblazer is one of the greatest series of all time and this shits all over it. I can’t wait for Constantine to start firing mystical lasers from his hands and wearing spandex.
I am probably overreacting.
I’ve always like Lemire, I’ve always liked the John Constantine Character, to me that means I have to give er a shot.
Please do. Maybe I am being reactionary.
I will be sure to share my opinions on it. I’ve got a quite eclectic taste.
I’ll have a review tomorrow, and Muffed, weigh in as well. I’ve got less invested in the character than some.
Definitely picking up Saga, just dropped Batman after Snyders terrible requiem issue that was comprised of Batman getting bitched at by a teenager…yeah thanks but no thanks. Also dropped NIghtwing and most of the other Bat books since really I only read them for Damian. Stoked to get Nowhere Men as well and also Five Ghosts! But I will avoid Constantine like the plague, I’ve been a life long Hellblazer fan and you couldnt pay me to buy that comic even as much as I love Jeff Lemire.
