Tomorrow, God Of War: Ascension arrives… and hopefully it’s finally Kratos’ swan song. Here’s why.
God of War III Pretty Much Wrapped Up His Story
The whole long, messy tragedy of Kratos’ life ended with God Of War III, the most technically accomplished game in a technically accomplished series. Kratos resolved his issues and managed, after five games, to finally do something that wasn’t utterly selfish, near-sighted, and stupid. Even Ascension acknowledges this, filling in the years between Kratos killing his family and the first game in the series, like, oddly, Ready at Dawn’s PSP games. And that’s pretty much the best we’re going to get, because…
Kratos Is An Awful, Awful Person
By all accounts, Ascension’s story will try to make Kratos more human and relatable, according to the game’s director:
“He’s still an anti-hero in many ways, but it was one of those things where we give people a look at his human side so fans can relate to him better and understand some of the stuff he went through when he was younger.”
What human side? By the time this game picks up, Kratos has just killed his family after rampaging across the countryside as an avatar of Ares for years. From the previous games, we know how he killed the intervening decade between this game and God Of War: Killing everything in his path.
As we’ve pointed out previously, literally everything that happens in these games is caused by the fact that Kratos is both a dolt and a homicidal maniac. Which is fitting, in a way; to the ancient Greeks, he’d be a tragic hero. Then again, the ancient Greeks also saw nothing wrong with punishing adultery by feeding your daughter to a horse, either.
He Was Always A Weak Character
Part of the reason the game is a prequel is that, well, we know pretty much jack about Kratos as a person beyond the fact that he likes stabbing things with his Chaos Blades, collecting useless secondary weapons, and having sex with prostitutes. He’s not really developed as a character, even in the games that supposedly fill in his personal history, because his personal history can be boiled down to “stabbing things”. It’s not like the guy has hobbies, or political opinions, or is a great fan of plays.
There’s simply nothing to Kratos. To be fair, there doesn’t have to be: These aren’t story-driven games. But the fatigue is starting to show, as Sony realizes that new mechanics only go so far, and that’s being reflected in trying to “humanize” a threshing machine.
A New Character Can Allow For More Changes
Ascension introduces a multiplayer mode, which is a change of pace for the series, to put it mildly. But honestly, it’s a welcome one.
The God Of War franchise is superb in terms of gameplay and design, but it’s also essentially the same game with relatively minor tweaks, and no studio can spend nearly a decade developing the same game over and over again without wanting to branch out. A new character means they can reset expectations for the series a little bit, and experiment with new ideas. How about an open-world God Of War game? One told from multiple perspectives, where choices you make as one character affect playing as the other?
SCE Santa Monica is a good studio, and they deserve a chance to experiment with their franchise. If that involves ditching Kratos, then so be it: The franchise can support more than one protagonist.

Have to admit that I’m a huge fan of the God of War series (love the action and the mythology behind it, also titties), but even I agree with a lot that’s said here. I figured III was the final nail in the coffin, but when Ascension was annouonced, I got excited, but not nearly as excited for all th other games. Thanks being a crazy asshole Kratos, but it’s time to take a break.
I’m going to play the hell out of this game, but I’m done with Kratos as a character.
Getting it today myself as well. Loved the last game. One of the few games though that I think the insane modes are just unplayable. I am a huge Greek/Roman mythology buff as well and enjoyed interacting with the Gods in the previous game.
I never got into this series, although I have friends that swear it’s the Best Thing Ever. I’m not morally against violent media or anything, but it seems to be murder porn and nothing more. I just don’t find that terribly interesting.
Maybe I’ll give it a shot if there’s a separate volume control for just Kratos. Goddamn, that dude’s yelling is really irritating.
Apparently he yells less in this game. I…question that.
Idk, I love me a good action-adventure game with puzzles sprinkled through it, but I feel like I missed the boat on GoW altogether. These games scream adolescent rage fantasy to me. I probably would have jizzed everywhere if I discovered God of War around the time I was really into Dragonball Z.
Oh, they absolutely are, complete with van art personified.
I agree with this article. I can’t really explain why I love the God of War series so much. I do though. It was always one of my favorites. I know it will be basically the same game, but updated. Just as 2 and 3 were. I know that is usually my complaint about a lot of the sequels that come out. (COD I’m talking to you) However, I can’t help it. I can’t even really explain it. It’s like when a new Tony Jaa movie comes out. I know it will be more of the same, but it’s new enough that I love it.
Yeah I get that same feeling for it as well.
To be fair, each game has taken such a ridiculous leap in scale and absurdity that it’s like a whole new game.
Even if they are essentially upgrades to mechanics and whatnot, I still like the series because you can tell that SCE is dedicated as hell and they don’t just turn out constant retreads to hit their annual profit margin.
The God of War games are what got me into gaming. Watching my friends play it in college blew my mind. “You mean the red orbs just find their way to you and you don’t have to run around making sure you got all of them before they run out? wooooaaahhh….” (I’m a girl with no brothers, I only had a gameboy pocket that I used mostly on road trips, my parents were low tech people wouldn’t have bought a console for me even if I’d asked for one etc. etc….) GoW means a lot to me. I LOVE this series.
That being said, I totally agree that a new character would be awesome. SPOILER!!! There was that weird openness at the end of III (bloody trail after the credits anyone?) and I want to know what will happen to the world. And just because Kratos probably limped away doesn’t mean we need to go back to him completely. Maybe we start out as a character who survives the chaos that Kratos has wrought and we are responsible for rebuilding it… fighting strange creatures, going to other Gods of other cultures for help maybe? (probably not…) I mean I think Isis and Odin are looking at Greece thinking “look at those sloppy, weak motherfuckers…. can’t even control one freaking guy…” (also, Egyptian and Norse gods are dark and badass… but not as well known, so maybe it’d be too weird to bring them in… but with everyone else dead what are you going to do? idk I’m just spitballing…) Maybe in the end we meet a debilitated Kratos, and either he’s rehabilitated and helps us or we have to fight him. How great of a boss fight would that be TO FIGHT KRATOS?!?! The ultimate symbol of badassery and moving on with a new generation. No matter how we fixed things, we would be AN ACTUAL FUCKING HERO, rebuilding the world and bringing life and lightness back… would this be done by bringing back the gods who were totally douche nuggets…. or what? I don’t know. Although novice gamer me LOVED the direct, linear game play, I could see them opening up the world a bit and this being a good story to do it in. I’m not saying make it a Skyrim, but opening it up could bring a lot of opportunities. Either way, I want it. I want it bad. If I could say goodbye to Altaiire and Ezio in Assassins Creed than I can bid Kratos a fond farewell too…
holy shit that’s really long. Sorry everyone. :-/
Did you ever play the first one and open up the extra videos at the end? They had one that opened up to the idea of a modern take on continuing the story that seemed kind of cool, and I always wished they would actually go with it.
Some seriously cool ideas in here. I’d play the hell out of that game.
@suave I did play one but I don’t remember the extra videos… I know I have a PS3 version of that around here somewhere…
@Hixey Thank you! My husband and I have discussed the other Gods things a few times. He wants the Norse Gods because they seem a more obvious fit when it comes to fighting and badassery, but I think the Egyptian Gods make more sense because they’re geographically closer and are darker and more mysterious. RABBLERABBLERABBLE! But in all honesty I don’t think they’d actually do that… With rebuilding the world though, how cool would an open world concept be where you have to fight new monsters and find bits and pieces of the old Gods… “You found Hera’s left boob! Only twenty pieces of Hera left before you unlock VEGETATION….”
You gotta pitch that game to Sony somehow! That’d be fuckin’ awesome. I’d love some Egyptian mythology, especially, but Norse stuff is definitely better-known, what with The Avengers and such.
I’d also be down with an American Gods crossover, ha.
I love the attention to detail in both graphics and story, but God of War has always felt like fighting underwater to me. There’s no impact. Double Dragon had impact. It’s like squeezing a stress ball vs. punching a bag.
I play God of War games solely to stab and mutilate things in hilarious ways so a lack of character development really doesn’t bother me.
“…no studio can spend nearly a decade developing the same game over and over again without wanting to branch out.”
Unless that game has Zelda in the title, in which case you can spend two.
Even there, though, they did some pretty major changes. Wind Waker springs to mind.
GOW ended after 3 for me. All of this extra stuff doesn’t even count to me.
I’m glad you wrote this because I got into an argument with a friend the other day who was super excited about this game. I have Kratos fatigue. In the third game I only used the gauntlets cause I was so tired of that one combo I always did with his blades. Also in the third game, as I played, I absolutely felt like a villain protagonist. I love a good revenge story but c’mon. the only saving grace to that game story wise is that he finally realized that he was the asshole.
I want a new God Of War set in a different mythology. By Odin’s beard that would be sweet.
Tyr never gets any love.
Is there a Norse god not associated with war?
Sony should just re-release Heavenly Sword labeled as “God of War: Rebirth” and pretend it’s a sequel.
“God of War: This Time It’s a Chick So Stop Whining About The Sex Scenes Goddamnit.”
I for one LOVE the God of War games. The setpieces are crazy and the action is always satidfying. I thought when Ascension was announced that it was just..whatever. But this isn’t the first case of the story supposedly ending and then SURPRISE new game! cough…..Halo. And I thought “whatever Halo 4, CASH GRAB!” But then I played it. Loved it, and I know by recently playing the Demo that the new God of War will be just as fun; Especially now that there’s multiplayer I’ll be playing the shit outta that. as long as it’s not broken.
