Joss Whedon was a guest on last Friday’s Empire podcast. He starts talking about The Avengers 2 around the thirty-minute point, which has been transcribed by CBM. At first he talks about how the script is finished, but needs a little more.
“There’s still ‘very fine tuning’ to do on the script. There are many thing that can be ‘plussed’ and be better and also, there’s some science in it, which means I have scenes where someone says ‘Science the sciency science’. So I’m like ‘I’ll fix that later.'”
Please don’t fix it later. I will pay good money to see Mark Ruffalo shout, “Science the sciency science!” And then someone can say he’s going too far, and then Robert Downey Jr. can be all like, “Step aside, we’re doing science.”
Whedon added that they’re still using Quicksilver, saying, “He’s in our movie and he’s going to be dope.” He then explained his motivation for using the character which Fox is also going to use in X-Men: Days Of Future Past.
“Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, very close to my heart because they were Avengers the whole time I was reading the book as a kid. […] Oh, and sometimes they were ‘EVIL’ but sometimes they were good. They’re very textured, they’re very different from everybody else in the mix. They’re not there to make things easier on The Avengers but what we do with the group once we’ve got them is ‘squeeze.’ The fun I’m having doing that is probably unseemly.”
The most interesting answer came in an unexpected way, and consider this next part a spoiler.
When Joss was asked if there will be another humorous Old-English word like ‘quim’ thrown in the film: “Everyone is going to be looking for the Loki-Hulk smash moment and you’ll be looking for quim. No, first of all, imitating what I did before is the surest way to do it not as well. Second of all, Loki’s not there to say those terrible things. Although I do think we should bring the word back, not as an insult, it’s just a nice word.” [CBM]
This could be interpreted to mean Loki isn’t in The Avengers 2, or he might be saying Loki’s purpose isn’t to spew archaic vulgarities. If it’s the latter, that’s unfortunate, because getting old timey swearwords into a PG-13 movie is a coup. Somehow, the MPAA watched that scene and didn’t notice Loki was calling Black Widow a whiny seaward. That’s a victory for every kid who’s discovered a new swearword labeled archaic in the big dictionary then used it in class without getting in trouble.
Then again, Whedon is probably saying Loki isn’t in The Avengers 2, which has been rumored for awhile. Considering Loki had a large role in Thor, The Avengers, and the upcoming Thor 2, it might be time to give that villain a break for awhile. On the other hand, NOOOOOOOOO!
