‘Six-Gun Gorilla’ #1: The Comic You Should Be Reading This Week

We’ve got this week’s release list, and a lot of reviews from DC, Dark Horse, IDW, and Valiant. Not to mention our favorite book of the week, about a talking, well-armed gorilla.

You can find the full release list on the last slide, but if you’re in a rush, here are the highlights.

  • DC launches Batman: Zero Year with Batman #21, and also Scott Snyder’s take on Superman, Superman Unchained; we reviewed both yesterday. There’s also more Suicide Squad and Lil’ Gotham.
  • Marvel finishes Alpha: Big Time and has more of the wonderful Wolverine.
  • Image has more Manhattan Projects and Great Pacific.
  • Dark Horse finishes the superb Black Beetle: No Way Out, and starts both Breath Of Bones: A Tale of The Golem and The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys.
  • IDW lauches Thumbprint, and a new Crow miniseries, Curare.
  • Boom! launches Six-Gun Gorilla and has more Bravest Warriors.
  • And Valiant continues Harbinger Wars.

And now for the reviews, starting with the comic you should be reading this week.

<!–pagetitle:Six Gun Gorilla #1–>

Comics owe a lot to the pulps, and in fact we’re in the middle of a pulp revival right now, spearheaded by Dynamite and by books like The Black Beetle. But Simon Spurrier, best known around here for the superb miniseries Extermination and his work on X-Men Legacy, has a very different take on the pulps.

Six-Gun Gorilla is “pulpy”, but “pulpy” in the sense that “goofy things are presented without comment.” This is a book that takes place in the middle of a war in an alternate dimension where only pneumatic weapons and clockwork tools actually function, armies use giant turtles as bases, and the news is projected live via tumors that make you psychic. It’s undeniably pulp, but pulp in a different sense from other books on the stands.

And it’s rooted in character. Our hero isn’t the aforementioned primate but rather a nameless librarian, obsessed with the pulps, who chose becoming a bloody smear in an alternate dimension over dealing with his problems. Spurrier can be a real smart-ass when he wants to be, but here he sets that tone aside for something a bit more sincere and heartfelt.

The book is ably supported, art-wise, by Jeff Stokely, who keeps things just cartoony enough to keep the book light while showing off a rather cinematic art sense on the page, like this panel:

There’s nothing quite like Six-Gun Gorilla on the stands, and as a result, it’s the comic you should be reading this week. But what else is on the stands?

<!–pagetitle:American Vampire: The Long Road To Hell–>

This one-shot is largely a showcase for Rafael Albuquerque, who co-plotted the story with Scott Snyder and handled the art and scripting. And it’s a clever book, best described as the movie Badlands with vampires. It’s ultimately a love story, and a bittersweet one, and a great read. If you’re in the mood for a horror book, check it out.

<!–pagetitle:Masters of The Universe #1–>

Keith Giffen decides to answer the question of what would happen if Jack Kirby got the chance to write and draw a He-Man book. And the answer is that it’s awesome. This drips Kirby with every page, especially Giffen’s pencils and dialogue, and if this is where this series of one-off stories is going, we can’t wait to see what else is coming.

<!–pagetitle:Green Lantern Corps #21–>

What’s telling here is the tone the book takes. As we discussed with Van Jensen, The Green Lanterns are so trashed and mistrusted they have to abduct new recruits. Meanwhile, John Stewart and Fatality have the worst date in recent memory in the DCU, which is saying something. It’s a strong launch to the book, and we’ll be curious to see where the new Lanterns highlighting will go as characters.

<!–pagetitle:Star Wars #6–>

Brian Wood closes the first “arc”, such as it is, with a truly amazing dogfight. We’ll spare you any more discussion about this book, as we’ve talked about it before: Suffice to say if you love comics, it should be in your hands right now.

<!–pagetitle:The Black Beetle: No Way Out #4–>

Francesco Francavilla wraps up his first miniseries with his trademark gorgeous art; the center spreads of this book alone are worth every penny you pay. The story ends about how you’d expect, but with art this vivid, you’ll be too busy drinking it in to care.

<!–pagetitle:Breath of Bones: A Tale Of The Golem #1–>

Despite the cover, Steve Niles’ story of the Golem during World War II is a much slower burn. Niles’ story and Dave Wachter’s black and white, detailed artwork is more about the quiet human drama of a boy slowly being pulled into the war and a grandfather struggling with fear and doubt than it is about a giant monster messing Nazis up.

It’s a showcase for Wachter’s work, though; his faces are vivid and communicate volumes, and he gets an opening to show he can handle an action sequence and then some. Especially if you buy books for the art, this should be something you pick up.

<!–pagetitle:The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys #1–>

Gerard Way is, of course, better known as a musician, but he’s earned respect from comics fans for Umbrella Academy. This book is best described as an odd mix of the cult classic film Six-String Samurai and Tank Girl, a comparison helped along by Becky Cloonan’s art and Dan Jackson’s coloring. It’s a distinctly odd-ball book, and it’s fast-paced on top of that: The first issue feels like both a full story and the start of something larger. Highly recommended, and we’ll be curious to see what’s next.

<!–pagetitle:X #2–>

We’re at the second issue, and, sadly, this book seems to have just pretty much run out of ideas. It’s gory, but none of the characters are interesting and there’s very little at stake here. If Duane Swierczynski weren’t involved you’d think this was a script from the original run pulled out of cold storage. That’s great for fans, but not for those looking for a new spin on a fairly standard ’90s Dark Age character.

<!–pagetitle:The Crow: Curare #1–>

James O’Barr’s return to The Crow was a solid, if slightly unremarkable, story about the Crow killing Nazis by the barrel. This story, however, downshifts into something no less dark but more intimate: A retired police detective tormented by a brutal child murder.

Antoine Dodé would seem an odd art choice at first, but his rough-hewn artwork and monochromatic color choices effectively balance the dark script. Honestly, a realistic version of this book would probably turn most stomachs. It’s something far different for the franchise, and we’ll be curious to see what O’Barr has planned for the remaining two issues.

<!–pagetitle:Thumbprint #1–>

This thriller, based on a Joe Hill short story, is a low-key but effective story, adapted by Jason Ciaramella, and Vic Malhotra handling the art. Built around Abu Ghraib, and survivor’s guilt, Malhotra pitches it a little dark with the inks, but the book is a change of pace and surprisingly engaging even if it’s all setup, so far.

<!–pagetitle:Doomsday.1 #2–>

The first issue was a bit… cliched. The second issue of John Byrne’s post-apocalyptic story continues the trend, to put it mildly. Let’s just say there’s nothing here you won’t see coming, and that Byrne seems to have a little Walking Dead envy.

<!–pagetitle:Harbinger Wars #3–>

What stands out most about Joshua Dysart’s crossover, at this point, is just how funny it really is. Granted, the entire thing being framed as a disaster debriefing has led to some fairly funny moments, but even the bad guys, H.A.R.D. Corps, get some incredibly funny humanizing moments; even the baddest of badasses hate it when they have to cut their jetpacks. This is easily one of the best action books on the stands right now, and definitely worth picking up.
