Keiji Inafune Kickstarts 'Mega Man' Spiritual Successor 'Mighty No. 9' In Record Time

It hasn’t been so good to be a Mega Man fan as of late. A couple years back, Keiji Inafune, the co-creator and longtime producer of the Mega Man series left Capcom to do his own thing and Capcom responded in the most mature manner possible, by cancelling all in-the-works Mega Man games and basically acting like their own mascot never existed.

Sadly it doesn’t seem as though Capcom is going to change their tune anytime soon, but wait, what’s this? This weekend Keiji Inafune popped up on Kickstarter with Mighty No. 9 — essentially a new Mega Man game whose characters have been changed just enough to avoid legal action from Capcom. Hit the jump for more info and cool little hype video/documentary…

Mighty No. 9 hit its funding goal of $900,000 in less than 24-hours, but there’s still some worthwhile stretch goals to aim for. Most notably, if they manage to raise 2.5 million, they’ll bring the game to consoles (Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U), which is really how any new Mega Man game ought to be played.

So yeah, shat on, kicked around American developers have been taking advantage of the Kickstarter thing for a while, but now it seems like Japanese developers are getting in on the act. Wonder who’s next? Sakaguchi with a real Final Fantasy successor? A new 2D Castlevania? The possibilities are pretty deep.
