George Miller is insane, and that’s meant in the best way possible. This is the guy who, after years of making Mad Max movies, decided to shift gears and make Heart of Darkness with dancing penguins. And we’ve been hearing about Mad Max: Fury Road for a while now, but there’s finally a light on the horizon. It’s coming May 15th, 2015, thirty years after Beyond Thunderdome… well, for now, anyway.
The plot of Mad Max: Fury Road is strictly under wraps, but we’re betting it involves Tom Hardy being an anti-hero in a dusty postapocalyptic wasteland full of insane people. Considering this movie has been discussed and worked on for nearly a decade, it’s actually kind of impressive we don’t know much about it beyond the cast and that Miller is involved.
As for why the release date is squishy, summer 2015 is going to be jam-packed with movies. The week after, Tomorrowland from Brad Bird hits theaters, and a week later The Avengers: Age Of Ultron arrives. Mad Max might be able to take out Brad Bird and J.J. Abrams in the Thunderdome, but the Avengers are going to kick his ass. Likely not helping matters is that it’s extremely unlikely Fury Road will be rated anything other than R.
Considering that Warner Brothers has not just a potential new film franchise wrapped up in this, but also a next-gen video game franchise they’ve spent a lot of money developing, they’re probably going to blink and move this to later or earlier in the year. But either way, it’s finally coming, and that means all your Thunderdome jokes are fresh again. Try not to enjoy that too much.
