The Latest ‘Star Wars Rebels’ Character Is A Taste Of The Franchise’s Future

Star Wars Rebels is proving to be an interesting sneak peak at what the Star Wars franchise is probably going to become under the stewardship of Disney. The first trailers for the show had a very strong Hunger Games vibe, and now Disney has revealed Sabine, a hip new bounty hunter who’s described as “spunky and feisty with a little bit of attitude”. Also she does graffiti! And customizes her armor! And never stops smirking!

Check out a video about Sabine (set to rad generic punk music) below…

Phew, I think I’m getting a buzzword headache here.

On the one hand, Star Wars is for kids (sorry dudes, it’s true) so updating it to match what kids today like makes sense. On the other hand, one of the charms of classic Star Wars was that it was kind of timeless — it was a story involving futuristic technology, based on pulp stories from the 40s and 50s, featuring hairstyles from the 70s.

Star Wars Rebels on the other hand, seems to be purely a product of the 2010s, and will probably look hopelessly uncool a decade from now when, I dunno, kids are into hopscotch and zoot suits again or whatever.
