Honestly, I’d no intention of seeing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II this weekend. It’s not that I’m not a fan of the movies, or the books — of which I’ve read only two, unlike my pal Magary, who’s read them all — it’s just that the whole series and the hype machine built around it has begun to grate on me a little. I’ve just sort of felt like it’s overstayed its welcome a bit. (Hides under desk with hands over his head.) I’ve wanted to continue to love it passionately, honestly I have, but Harry Potter has become almost like a religion to so many people — Harry Potter has transformed into Jesus Potter (pictured at right), and that just hasn’t set well with me for whatever reason. (Ed. note: I’m that a-hole who tends to revolt against things that everyone loves. So take all of this with the proverbial grain of salt.)
But then I read some of the reviews of the film earlier today and holy crap they’re simply glowing. As of right now, it has a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the best reviewed films of the year. And I’ll be damned if suddenly I don’t find myself looking for tickets to one of tonight’s showings in my area. DAMN YOU JESUS POTTER!
About the film, Joe Morgenstern of the Wall Street Journal wrote, “The best possible end for the series.” A local reviewer I really respect, John Wirt of the Baton Rouge Advocate, called it “the greatest Potter film of them all.” And another reviewer I respect, Elizabeth Weitzman of the New York Daily News, said, “It’s wonderful. Epic and heartbreaking and just as grand as it needs to be.”
I was so ready to hate and now they’ve buttered me all up to love again. DAMMIT! Additionally, a small part of me was actually giving thought to going see Britney Spears tonight, AS A GAG, after a friend texted to offer me a ticket. I can totally see this weekend shaping up to be something I didn’t foresee — a Britney/Harry Potter festival. God help me.
Anyway, after the jump are some of the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II gifs that are already being circulating by the fans who saw the movie last night and earlier today, like this one. Spoilers abound, naturally. Enjoy…
