Whenever Internet folk hero Bill Murray is the guest on Letterman, it’s typically an odd slice of wonderful — with Murray usually showing up wearing sort of costume for no explicable reason — that culminates in something completely off the wall. Last night, to celebrate Letterman’s 30th anniversary of being on television, Murray, who was apparently Letterman’s first guest ever, was on the show, and his appearance pretty much followed the exact recipe I just outlined.
Yes, wearing a New York Giants uniform with eye black on his face and shoulder pads on the outside of the uniform, Murray rolled into the studio with a cupcake for Dave that he claimed to have made himself. He then proceeded to almost start a fire in the studio while lighting the candles on the aforementioned cupcake. Later the pair went out into the street for Murray to attempt field goals. Regis Philbin was briefly brought out of retirement to play the referee.
UPDATE: Looks like bill also had some fun with some young, cute girls from South Korea backstage as well.
Here’s the presentation of the cupcake…
And here they are kicking field goals on the street…
Totally ordinary night on the show if you ask me.
