The pic you see above is a screengrab from last night’s Late Show. It’s a photo that Dave held up of himself and Howard Stern during Stern’s first appearance on Letterman’s show back when it was on NBC in 1984. They seem to have both gotten better with age, no?
Anyway, yesterday marked Letterman’s 30th anniversary of being on television and he brought Stern — one of his most prolific and entertaining guests — on to mark the occasion. Naturally, the conversation between the two ultimately led to Leno-bashing, and while I’m sure some of you may find it tired at this point, few things make me more giddy than Letterman taking pissy on-air shots at Leno, and this whole trashing session was pretty great — culminating with Dave comparing Leno to Charles Manson. Additionally, Stern vowed to never, EVER appear on Leno’s show, despite prodding by NBC (who currently employs Stern on “America’s Got Talent”) as a show of loyalty to Dave. It made for some pretty great television.
Enjoy…
And here’s the scene where the two reflect back on the old days…

Dave is always at his best when he’s blatantly disdainful of someone. And it’s not like Leno doesn’t deserve it, what with his hacky jokes and fake niceness and refusal to go the hell away.
Honestly, I’d watch a whole show of Dave just ranting about stuff he hates.
Seconded. He is definitely at his best when he’s in curmudgeon mode, in my opinion.
I would watch these guys talk about Leno til the day I die. Of course I assume they’ll both outlive me.
