Last week, The Colbert Report abruptly suspended production for an unspecified family emergency. Now we know more. The Post reports Colbert’s 91-year-old mother, Lorna, is ill. The family is making it a priority to visit her but are keeping the details private. A spokesperson for Comedy Central announced on Sunday that production resumes on the show Monday. Tonight’s guest will be novelist Ann Patchett.
This weekend, Colbert (who was absent from Twitter since last Tuesday) tweeted, “My family and I would like to thank everyone who has offered their thoughts and prayers. We are grateful and touched by your concern.”
Colbert, the youngest of eleven children, is very close to his mom as evidenced by the video below which he filmed for the CafeMom’s Moms Matter event earlier this year. When Colbert was ten, he lost his father and two older brothers in the 1974 crash of Eastern Air Lines Flight 212. This is possibly the most depressing thing I’ve ever typed at the end of a post, so instead I’ll end this by pointing out that the Colbert Report Middle East Expert is so cute…
Maybe she can run the show any time Colbert needs to take a personal leave.
