If you tuned in to Comedy Central at 11:30 est last night for the Colbert Report you may have been saddened, like I was, to discover that the show was a rerun when it wasn’t supposed to be. According to Mediaite, people who had tickets to last night’s scheduled taping were sent an email informing them that the taping was canceled due to “unforeseen circumstances.” When it was pointed out that Colbert’s typically active Twitter feed had been dark since Tuesday, “OMG IS STEPHEN COLBERT DEAD?!?!?” speculation began to run wild. No, seriously — rumors really did spread on Twitter that he was dead.
One intrepid reporter even checked to see if Colbert was locked up in jail anywhere in New York (Try New Jersey as well next time since that’s where he lives). It apparently never occurred to people that maybe the host, you know, got sick, as human beings tend to do from time to time, and wasn’t fit to go on the air. Or perhaps he had some sort of family emergency to tend to, which, as it turns out, is exactly what happened.
Reports the Wall Street Journal:
Stephen Colbert has suspended production of his satirical comedy show temporarily because of an emergency in Mr. Colbert’s family, according to people familiar with the show.
“The Colbert Report” is expected to resume production soon, perhaps as early as next week, the people added.
I hope Colbert is comforted knowing that he’s so loved by the internet that his absence caused a mass freak-out. In the meantime, we extend our best wishes to Stephen and the Colbert family. Hope all is well, buddy.
