Jon Stewart opened his show last night, the first he’s done since Hurricane Sandy bitch-slapped the East Coast, with a question: “Do you ever have one of those days where everything you ever loved as a child was under water?” As someone who comes from a place where stuff like this happens all too frequently, YES, and it’s awful. It’s just still so hard for me to wrap my brain around the fact that the heartbreaking sort of stuff I’ve witnessed all my life every few years in Louisiana is now happening in the NYC area, the other place I’ve spent most of my time living.
It’s especially weird because there are essentially two Manhattans now — the dark, chaotic one downtown below 39th street, and the business-as-usual one above 39th street. I haven’t had a chance to do it yet but a couple of friends have crossed over between the two Manhattans by foot at night and I’m told that it’s CREEPY AS HELL.

Anyway, Stewart and the Daily Show were excellent in their coverage of the whole thing last night. Here’s part one…
And here’s part two…

As a kid who grew up in new orleans east, yes. yes I have.
So proud of Gov. Christie for putting the partisan douchebaggery behind him when faced with a crisis.
Don’t worry, I’m sure if he jetted off to Vegas for a fundraiser, the media wouldn’t say a word about it
I live in Houston, where Ike ruined our shit a few years ago, and I was supposed to be in NYC this week. Going that far north and still being hit with a hurricane would confuse and sadden me to no end.
Not to be outdone, Los Angeles will get crushed by a massive earthquake any day now.
What the hell I can’t watch the video, it plays but I have a dark courtain on top of it with a sign that says “Sorry, the content is currently unavailable. Please choose another video, or try again later.”
Be sure to watch the pattern of ‘Power Recovery’ in the city. *hint- it will be done according to ‘tax’ revenue. This makes a good story..trust me! Last year we had a doozy wet snow storm followed by a freeze, trees were snapping like ‘rice crispies’ and power was off everywhere in the area. I live by a ‘state trooper’ station, so of coarse my power was only off ‘briefly’. I watched the map of recovery provided by the local utility and noticed a defining trend. You can predict, who’s power will be restored.
Maybe more ‘political connections’ then ‘tax revenue’
Those two are usually pretty closely tied.
