Back on 4/20, longtime music icon satirist “Weird Al” Yankovic released a parody of Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” — to entertain the stoners on their big day, no doubt — that was almost immediately shut down by Gaga’s management team, who alleged copyright infringement or something. Weird Al wrote on his blog at the time…
After putting my Lady Gaga parody on YouTube this morning – and announcing that it wouldn’t be on my next album because Gaga didn’t approve it – there was a huge outpouring of disappointment from the Internet.
Apparently the fact that she didn’t approve it was news to Lady Gaga herself!
Gaga’s manager has now admitted that he never forwarded my parody to Gaga – she had no idea at all. Even though we assumed that Gaga herself was the one making the decision (because, well, that’s what we were TOLD), he apparently made the decision completely on his own.
And Gaga loves the song.
So today the full version of the video was posted to YouTube for all to see and the Internet seems to be entertained by it. With that said, I’ve never really been a big fan of “Weird Al” and his schtick. The only thing he did that I ever remotely liked was “Eat It,” and that was 25 years or so ago. What have you done for me lately, Weird Al?! But hey, at least he’s still out there trying, and some people out there found this to be hilarious, so what do I know?
